Help! He's turned into a grouch!
My husband had surgery this past Tuesday so now he is on the full liquid diet. He is already tired of the creamed soups, cream of wheat, and everything else.
Also, his taster and smeller are out of whack. (this is normal?) The clear liquid drinks that he had before surgery he can't stand the taste of. He said the taste of water is even nasty.
I need some full liquid recipes that have some flavor.
Help!
Thanks,
Michelle

It may be pushing it, but try some refried beans with a bit on melted grated cheese on top. Little hot sauce if he likes spicy. I was eating this 5 days after surgery. Just take it slow, a couple spoonfuls, a little cheese, even some sour cream or guac if he wants. Tell him to make sure to mush up the beans real good.. small slow bites. But refried beans saved me from insanity after all the yogurt and cream of wheat, pureed soups, BLAH!!! Good luck! And just remember, for you and him, that this stage doesn't last forever! I was eating steak in less than 2 months. A very small piece, but steak, none the less!
Be careful not to increase his diet to solids until the doctor says it's ok! I was on full liquids for 7 days. If he just has surgery on Tuesday then he might not be ready for solids, even if he thinks so.
It is normal to have taste and smell changes. It is an effect from the anesthesia. you are his care giver should not have to suffer his moods. HE MADE THIS DECISION. What ever made him think it was going to be easy! So sorry he doesn't like the take of his liquid diet anymore, unless the doctor tells you to move up the diet you can't do it.
Also, even when you start solids, you are very limited and you get super sick of beans, cheese and chicken REALLY fast. Welcome to post RNY life. He has a tough 3 months or more ahead of him if he is already this bad at a few days out.
I think the only thing he needs is a good, firm dose of reality. I know you asked for full liquid that has flavor, but I found in the liquid phase there is nothing that makes it better it just is what it is. It doesn't last forever! Hell, I was so miserable on the liquid dog food smelled good! He is will survive this.

It's all part of the process, and yes, it's pretty normal. Tastes and odors are an issue for many post ops, causing nausea. Add lemon or diluted fruit juice to water for flavor. Or add Crystal Lite to his water. I'd highly suggest you attend a few support group meetings with him, where you and he will heal the issues that other post ops find difficult. Depression may be an issue in coming weeks also. Make sure he takes his supplements, including ONLY calcium citrate and ONLY dry D3, no other forms of these will work. He needs around 75g of protein daily too. Trouble with newere post ops, is that each person is different. One flavor one post op likes may taste awful to your husband. He has to decide which flavors he likes or finds tolerable. DAVE

No mincing words - it's gonna suck at times and he's just gotta deal. Thinking of my protein & water as my "job" to do helped me reframe the "I'm so sick of" or "this tastes gross". I second the support group idea - get in early, go often!

I had the same reaction to the full liquid diet. Unjury Chicken Soup protein really saved the day for me. I'd make it a little thick and get it warm, and down it went. You could try to mimic it by taking soup base (available at your grocery store), add some warm water or broth then add some unflavored protein.
It's important to keep to the plan. That's what will lead to success down the road.

One more idea - I also liked the following egg nog
2 egg beaters (one of the little cups)
1 cup Lactaid
1 heaping tsp Stevia (Cup for Cup)
1/4 tsp extract (I use vanilla)
It has a good taste, which is nothing like a protein shake, yet an entire recipe has 20 grams of protein and no fat. I can only drink about 1/2 of this for a meal.

Mashed potatoes with St Hubert BBQ sauce saved me... I was still getting protein with the shakes. Just be careful when warming protein powder up... You can denature to protein and render it useless!
I used to make mocha shakes, by adding and ice cube or two and a sprinkle of decaf instant coffee before blending.
Add unflavoured protein powder when you make ff no sugar added puddings. You can even freeze them and have pudding pops!
I actually found the pureed diet tougher than the clear liquid diet. UGH! I moved on to the soft diet a day early b/c I couldn't take it anymore!
