increased sensitivity to sugar?

I dumped a couple times not long after surgery, but it's probably been two years since the last time.  I have been limiting my sugar intake to no more than 15 grams at a time, and I don't eat that much that often.  There are a couple protein bars I like with 12-15 grams of sugar so I use those sometimes, though I also use some bars with less sugar.  But I've been tolerating that much just fine.

Recently, though, I've had a few instances where I've eaten the same things I usually tolerate and had what I would describe as minor dumping symptoms.  This morning I ate one of the protein bars I eat often and almost as soon as I'd finished it I had to run to the bathroom to throw up and I was shaking and sweating and my heart was beating too fast.

So I guess I need to admit that I can no longer tolerate as much sugar as I could before.  But has anyone else had that happen?  I've read that some people dump early out and then stop dumping as they get further out.  But dumping getting worse?  Why would that happen?

Hi Kelly, what your sugar intake. Try using splenda it may be better.

I do use splenda when that's an option.  Some of the protein bars I like are made with sugar, though, not splenda.  Sometimes I'm out somewhere and choose to have a cookie and they do not have cookies made with splenda.  But at this point in time, I'm thinking I just need to choose not to eat the things made with real sugar.  I'm just curious about why this has become a problem for me just now.

Maybe it has something to do with the time of day you eat the higher sugar bars.  Like you said you ate this one in the morning, and then threw it up.  We tend to be more sensitive to things in the morning, our systems are still asleep.

Try eating that same bar today, later in the afternoon and see if it has the same effect?

I find that I tend to tolerate small amounts of sugar too, like 15 grms at a time, like once I ate 2 bites of cake with out the icing cause someone said the icing was terrible, and I was fine.  Then I ate 2 bites of cake 2 weeks later at another wedding, with the icing, seriously thought I was going to have to leave the wedding.  So the concentration levels of the sugar played a factor for me.  The icing was just too much.  Maybe that bar has the sugar more concentrated in one part of the bar so it hits you faster.  Does that make sense?  Like is there an icing on the bar, or chucks of something that contains the sugar, but the rest is sugar free.

Those are the only things I can think of.

Hmmm.  I never thought of that but it does seem like times recently it's bother me has been earlier in the day.  But a couple days ago I ate the very same protein bar and it did not bother me at all.  But I guess I will try avoiding that much sugar in the morning and see how it works in the evening.  Thanks for the idea.

Did you eat the bar on an empty stomach or had it been longer than normal between meals.  I have had RH reactions when eating something that did not bother me previously.  The only difference was the RH reaction happened when I had not eaten much at all that particular day or it had been a long time between meals.

I was on an empty stomach.  It was the first thing I ate that day.  So it had been eight or ten hours since I last ate.

I'm going to make sure from now on the my first meal of the day is very low in  sugar.  If I choose to do a protein bar with more than a couple grams of sugar, I will do it later in the day.  But I think I'm going to mostly focus on finding some bars I like with less sugar in them.  Part of the problem I'm having is that some bars are so high in calories.  I went to Vitamin Shoppe last night to buy some different ones to try and of course a lot of them are very high in sugar so they weren't options and then some that only had a gram or two of sugar were 300 calories or more.  Some were closer to 400 calories.  Good grief.  I guess if you're body building maybe you want that but I would rather my protein bars be more like 200 calories.

I don't dump like I did, but I've learned how much sugar I can handle (about 6-9g).

I don't know what would cause you to dump on something you have previously been able to handle.

Sometimes just the act of throwing up will cause the shaking, sweating and rapid heartbeat. Some of those protein bars are very dense and maybe you ate it a little faster than usual

Or, maybe you are coming down with something that is making you more sensitive. Be careful.

I have nothing personal to offer, but thought I'd note that in the year and a half I've been on OH, I've read 3-4 posts from folks who described the same thing.
