Should my calcium always be taken before my iron?

Should it always be 2 hours apart?

I've been taking them together since I thought calcium helps with absorption of Iron...

Damn, Kelly... now I feel like a dummy. But I'm glad for the information!

Calcium blocks the absorption of iron.  If you take them together, you'll absorb the calcium but not the iron.

You might be thinking of vitamin C, which helps with the absorption of iron.

They need to be at least two hours apart, can be longer if you want.  Doesn't matter if you do iron first or calcium first.  Just two hours, at least, apart.

I saw a commercial the other day for time released Citrical- I believe that it was a 1200mg tablet- do you think this is something we could try??

I imagine it would be just like extended release medications for us.  The issue is that our digestive tract is shorter than "normal."  For time released or extended release thing to work, they have to be in your digestive system for a certain amount of time.  With most meds, they need to be in there at least 12 hours, sometimes longer.  But meds generally won't stay in our small intestine that long.  I imagine the time release Citracal would be the same way and you wouldn't absorb all 1200 mg before it left your system.  I don't know for certain, though.

Calcium is the hardest one for me to remember as a new post-op. I talked to my nutritionist and she helped me set up a vague schedule (so I can change it when I get back to work).
I am on puree' and my surgeon / NUT want me to crush or dissolve most of my pills. I dissolve the Citracal in crystal light. NUT only wants me to take 500mg at a time.
