Taco Bell Tostada

So while I was trolling OH yesterday somewhere I ran across a post talking about a yummy homemade tostada.  All day it was all I could think of.  So when I got home I made dinner for the family and sent the hubby to get me a tostada from taco bell.  I had all the fixins at home to make one, but no tostada shells and I figured it would cheaper (and easier) to get one from TB.  So it hit the spot, but was not nearly as good had I made it at home.  The trouble is I ate the whole thing.  I did not get sickly full, but was satisfied.  My concern is that seemed like a lot of food, more than I normally eat.  Normally a few spoonfuls does me in.  This is the second time that I have eaten what to me seemed like a surprising amount of food, the other time was a taco salad.  Maybe its because they both had a lot of lettuce?  Anywho let the scolding begin...

No scolding. I know that there are a few foods that I seem to be able to really put away.  Normally, it takes 5 bites to satisfy my hunger.  Six is usually the "stop... STOP NOW!" eating limit, but when I eat crap I find that there are a few that I can eat quite a bit of.  Like thin crust pizza.  I can eat like two whole slices of that and not feel any ill effects.

Remember, you are not on a diet.   You have changed your eating habits for life.  This means that sometimes it's alright to eat something that isn't on the approved "high protein/low fat/low carb" menu.  If you start eating that way EVERY MEAL, come on back and we'll scold you if you'd like.  =]  Otherwise, enjoy yourself!

I wish I could eat pizza.  I ate the toppings off of a slice of pizza recently and it was okay.  But several hours later I had a terrible case of diarreah.  I talked to someone else who had RNY and they said that everytime they eat pizza they have the same reaction.  Her doctor told her that after a while (if you stay on the diet) your body gets used to lean meats, etc. and little fat and that the toppings probably overloaded her system and caused the diarreah.  I've sworn it off until I am at least in maintenance mode.  lol

There was NO WAY I could have eaten pizza a couple of months out.  =]  I believe that Nik probably has a recipe for post op pizza you might be able to handle.  (Check with your doc, of course).

I know that after about 3 or 4 months, I made a "pizza" using 2 slices of  lean ham as the crust.  I put a little sauce and a small amount of low fat mozerella cheese on top with two slices of turkey pepporoni.  Baked it.   The ham got a bit crunchy and was able to hold the toppings nicely.

Actually, that sounds good and I may make myself one today for lunch.  YUM!

Lastly, I buy tostada shells to make quick tostadas with ff refried beans,
enchilada sauce (open a can and freeze it in ice cube trays and store them in
freezer bags), low fat shredded cheese and chopped lettuce and fresh tomato
(also avocado, ff sour cream if you like). It makes up in a couple of minutes and
melts all yummy in the microwave.

It was under the title of stuck in a food rut.

Tostada serving size (g) 170 (5.99 oz) calories 250 saturated fat (g) 3.5 total fat (g) 10 trans fat (g) 0 cholesterol (mg) 15 sodium (mg) 550 carbohydrates (g) 30 dietary fiber (g) 9 sugars (g) 2 protein (g) 10

It wasn't the worst thing you could have eaten but maybe not the best choice this early out.  The volume was about 6 oz, which as you said included lettuce.  The calories aren't terrible but not enough protein to justify.  About 21 net grams of carbs.
I do like Taco Bell and it's one of the few places I can run into when I need to eat on the run.  I usually get a taco and pintos and cheese.  I'm not too sure about their meat, though.  Like I said, I usually like to get more protein bang for my calorie buck but there are times when you want something that doesn't have a lot of protein and I just make sure I make it up somewhere else.
You probably would have been better off making your own.  At least that way you can control what goes into it, like more beef and cheese, maybe beans.  That is a good meal.  Maybe only part of the shell which shouldn't be too hard if you fill up on the filling.
I wanted to add that whenever I get a craving I like to challenge myself to see if I can make it healthier and with more protein.  Like pizza.  I love making it with the cauliflower crust.  I have also make lasanga using cauliflower.  There is usually a way to make most everything you crave healthier.  Ask Nik.  She's the expert.

Tostada shells are slider foods so that is probably why you can eat the whole thing--my husband LOVES taco bell and now that I am in maintenance I will ocassionally indulge- I can't do things in flour tortillas since 3 bites of that am I am over full! So I order a mexican pizza with just 1 shell--our taco bells don't have tostadas that i know of- but from their web page I think the mexican pizza is the same thing with ground meat on it (and it has 2 shells unless you special order it)
