OT: He's gone.....
First, Congratulations and Welcome to becoming an AF mom. My middle son has been in the AF since 2003. Lackland was a great place, and yes, after all the hard work, you won't recognize the man he becomes. As a mom of 2 sons in the military, there is a fantastic website www.militarymoms.net - I know it has been a great place to ask questions etc.
Second, please tell your son Thank you from this military mom. Hang on for the bumpy ride, and get used to never knowing exact dates - another strong suit for military life. If you can go for graduation and the Airmans Run the morning before, I strongly suggest it! You won't regret it...and wear your walking shoes - it is a very large base!

When my husband left, it was the hardest thing I ever did to walk out of the MEPS building and drive home. We have three children ages 5, 4, & 2 when he left for basic. Almost every night, they would hear a noise in the kitchen (the heater kicking on) and they would run to the door screaming, "Daddy!!!" only to find he wasn't there. Then, when we FINALLY got to see him at graduation, the kids didn't recognize him and were scared to hug him. The first thing our 5 year old said to him was, "Are you my daddy?" It was SSSOOO sad! But by the end of that weekend, we were a happy family again. Leaving that Sunday was the second hardest thing I have ever done, which is exactly why we moved to a 2 bedroom apartment less than a mile away from his tech school so he could see us every night and stay with us on weekends.
Now we're stationed at Beale and there's no housing available on base and we just found our that for the second time in less than a year, we have to move because the people we're renting from have defaulted on their home loan. We're trying to get a house, but it costs alot of money to get a 100% financed VA loan. Even with the sellers paying $4,300, they want us to have around $8,000 @ closing. Makes me mad, but I still believe that my husband joining the military is the best thing we ever could have done for our family!
I'll be sure to remember you and your son in our family's prayers.
