Dot I bet your GYN will order a scan if your other physicians don't.  Being post-menopausal and having RNY I definitely recommend having a base scan.  I've had several since my WLS.  My out of pocket for the first one was $200, the second I had to pay 30% since I'd met my annual deductible.  It's definitely worth a couple hundred dollars to know where you are at now.

My doctor is recommending I do them every 2 years unless we see changes, then I'll do them annual.  So far my scans are wonderful.  Osteoporosis runs on both sides of my family so it's something I'm watching closely.

My GYN has a bone scanner there in his office, so, it would mean more money for him, so I bet he will order one!

Your D is too low, but I really wouldnt' take it daily.  The stuff really works and taking it daily will skyrocket your levels.  Yes, some people need it but you are better off taking it 2 or 3 times per week for 2 months and getting your levels rechecked. IF they aren't up around 70 or 80 in that time period, then you can increase more but I tend to think with you taking it daily for a week and then taking it 2 or 3 times per week, you will go up nicely. I started with 36 and after 2 months of taking it 2 times per week ended up at 97. After a few months, my levels dipped a bit so I went up to 3 times per week where I stayed for 2 years with levels right around 100.  Then out of the blue, my levels skyrocket to over 150, they couldnt' even measure it - it was off the charts.  My Endocrinologist seems to think that is what caused my severe and rapid onset of kidey stones.  I have to get urine testing to find out for sure.

If you increase your D, your PTH will go down.

A high RDW usually is related to either B12, folate or iron deficiency. since your B12 and folate are both great, it is probably due to your iron.  YOu aren't actually anemic but your iron could be higher and with a ferritin, it is hard to judge.  I would switch your iron types - and take more of it.  Carbonyl iron is a much better iron type, easy on your stomach, non-constipating and easy to absorb.  Tender irons from vitalady.com is 60mg and has the necessary vitamin C in the capsule.  I would take 2 per day to start and see how your numbers improve.

Your B6 is way too high.  You list in a post below all the different B complexes that you take.  We actually don't need any B complex.  It causes exactly what happened to you.  B6 can become toxic and causes severe problems if gets too high.  We get all the necessary b vitamins in our multi except vitamin B1 and B12.  You need to take atleast 1000mcg of sublingual B12 and 100mg of a separate vitamin B1.

You are lacking alot of vitamin and mineral labs.

As far as the bone density test - it shouldnt' matter your age.  I have been getting them since I am 35 years old.  You have good reason to need one - you are post menopausal, you have secondary hyperparathyroidism, = are you on thyroid medication?  Have you ever taken steroid?  Do you have any family history of osteoporosis?  Just the fact that you had WLS should qualify you right there due to malabsorbtion. You need to get a doctor to go to bat for you.  Almost all of us lose bone after 1 year and especially if you are post menopausal, you are much higher risk.

I had my last one at 1 year post op - I had my last period the day of my surgery.  IT got worse from 2 years prior but it was still normal.  I am scheduled for my next one in Sept  - 3 years post op - you need to get them every 2 years - if any signs of osteopenia or osteoporosis - then  yearly.    I get mine ordered by my Endocrinologist but if you dont' see one, then get your OB/GYN to order it.  They are used to fighting the system for post menopausal women.

Since getting my lab results, I am no longer taking any B Complex.  I'm only taking the BA B12 Sublingual tablet.

I have recently started vitalady's D-50 tablets once daily with my UpCal D.  I have also not been very good at taking Iron for the past 3 years because of constipation, but since getting my labs, I have been taking Iron Bisglycinate 25 mg once daily w/ Vitamin C.

I'm over-due for a GYN visit, and he made me mad last time I went a couple years ago, so I was wanting to find another, but because of this, I might just try to get over being mad at him and go back.  He has been my GYN since 1992...  lol

To answer your questions:  I am not on thyroid medication...  I haven't taken any steroids other than an occasional dose here or there (maybe a few times in my life)...  No known family history of osteoporosis.  My mother is 73 and has never broken a bone or had a bone density test (her doctor never ordered one?)...

Thanks for your help!
