Confused and Concerned..

Because of how serious it has gotten, I keep a blood glucose monitor in my classroom at all times and I told my kids that I have really bad hypoglycemia, that I drink protein shakes all teh time, and I might stop to check my blood sugar... I even have glucose tablets on the whiteboard tray with "Glucose" and arrows pointing to it. I'd rather the kids know, and if I start getting all messed up in the head they ask if I need to check my blood sugar. Better be in the know than have them misunderstand. I get VerY weird in the head when I'm crashing (of course I'm weird anyway, just by nature, so it's hard to tell the difference).

It got a lot more difficult when we moved to block, having to be "on" for 90 minutes with only 5 minutes between classes. But I'm upfront about my issues, and the kids are pretty understanding. A couple times my blood sugar has started to crash and I just calmly take out one of my snack bars and give them a minute to talk and I eat the snack.

But I really have reached my limits. I realize I can't function with 52 teenagers in a classroom designed for 30 kids. "luckily" my largest class is now "only" 43..... of course that is 43 high-needs at-risk kids ..... which is way way beyond a sensible amount. Wish there were grants to pay for splitting that class into two classes. I'd rather teach half that many in one 90 minute period and teach my prep hour rather than teach all at once and not give any of them the actual help they really need.

nuts are good, but you might need something with a bit of sugar too, because you want to raise your blood sugar FAST to get your brain functioning properly again. I have glucose tablets in the car, at home, and at work so that if I have a sudden drop, and it's in the danger zone, I can just eat a glucose tablet and THEN eat something with fat and protein. I've gotten so I avoid most foods that are primarily carbohydrates.

If your blood sugar is below 80, that is a sign that you're BS is low, and if it's below 45 it's an emergency (eat a glucose tablet, a sugar cube, drink OJ, or a sugar soda if nothing else presents itself)... once you have sugar in you have proteins and fats to stabilize it. When I have a BAD BS level (like when it got to 32) I test again in 15 minutes.. normally it's quite high at that point but when it was 32 I'd barely gotten it to 90, and I ate some more.

I hate poking my fingers, but it's better to learn myself with a few pokes than with a crashed car or convulsions or throguh passing out in front of my students!

I was wondering the same thing, I googled it and just briefly saw it said whether or not there is protein on the surface...so I assume its something with the protein level.

what is RH by the way?
Just the other day i did this too..My second day on a liquid diet.  I knew it was my blood sugars dropping cause i have had that happen on and off for the past 20 years probably.  i used to test on my dads machine tho and i was always normal...it almost feels like a sudden anxiety attack.  I figured for me the other day it was because i hadn't had a sprite for 4 days..ha!!

who knows why it happens but it does.  I am sure i it happens a lot you should probably get things checked out because it could be something else.  Good luck on the next 7-7.

Reactive Hypoglycemia is something that is increasingly prevalent amongst those who have had RNY (and some other WLS too).

The body is used to producing the insulin for the type of meal we ate pre-op. Now that we eat very little, if the body continues to produce too much insulin, then there usually isn't enough sugar in your blood stream to satisfy the needs of hte insulin... .so it eats into the blood sugar that is needed to function normally.... and that causes your blood sugar to drop to dangerous levels.

Blood sugar is normally between 80 and 120 normally. If it drops below 80, you're in a state of hypoglycemia.. not enough sugar in the blood. Below 70 and it becomes a real serious problem, and below 45 "they" say you should be on your way to the hospital. My doctor's office says that if it drops low, and I'm aware enough to get it under control then I don't have to go to the hospital, but everyone around me knows my issue so that if I faint, have convulsions, or start acting like a drunken person, they'll know that it is because of my blood sugar issues. It can be quite dangerous. Left untreated it can kill ya. Seriously. I'm afraid to drive because of it.

I have "ready snacks" available. Peanut butter crackers are a good go-to food because the cracker part provides some instant sugar, the peanut butter has protein and fat, and that helps modify and regulate the insulin. If necessary a glucose tablet can be consumed to help you get back to normal, but that isn't the only thing a person should use, because straight up sugar while getting you out of teh problem, will land you right back there if you don't be careful.

My go-to-snack is Kudos 100-calorie bars. Two of them and I dump. One makes me feel fine. Works as a little snack, and is tasty. Cheese sticks are a good high protein high fat food to help with snacking. Nuts are a good snack item, and I use nuts as my "pillow snack." ... something to snack on that will see me through teh night and keep me from a latenight session of RH

I'm self-diagnosed but my PCP concurs with my diagnosis. My blood sugar drops and I'm still trying to get to know myself well enoguh to have an idea of what foods cause it, and what it feels like when my BS is dropping too far too fast.
