I swear if it weren't for Miralax and magnesium oxide my life wouldn't be tolerable right now.  I go every day!  Before I got on the routine I would go several days without a BM.  I finally started taking Milk of Magnesia after a few days but that wasn't consistent.  I hit my bottom, so to speak, after I gave myself a hernia from straining.  I have the added problem of a rectocele so when I don't go I am more then miserable.
Since then my routine it is like clockwork, right down to the hour most days.  And I still feel like telling strangers on the street about it.
I only wish they had Miralax around when I was pregnant.  I might have been able to enjoy my pregnancies instead of being miserable between the constipation and hemorrhoids which were caused by the constipation.  I even wound up in the ER because of the constipation.
If they ever stop making Miralax I am screwed.

What do they do for you in the ER for constipation?  Give you an enema or something?

This was 26 years ago when I was pregnant.  They didn't do anything but tell me to start using Metamucil.  In fact, I remember the doctor telling me to put it in chocolate milk.  No wonder I gained about 80 lbs in that pregnancy.

Way to go Kelly!  hehehe

I feel for you.  I've dealt with constipation too.  I take 3 stool softeners a day.  That, along with a couple of pieces of sugar-free chocolate a day, and I'm "good to go" every day (pun intended).  However, I will still occasionally pass a BM about the size of a large cucumber.

Congratulations Kelly!

But would someone explain to me what causes the constipation??? My surgery is Wednesday ... how soon does this happen? From all the protein? Med? combination? ugh ...

Well, it doesn't happen to everybody, though it seems pretty common after RNY.  A lot of people seem to have diarrhea for a few days after surgery, and I sure did.  But then a lot of people get constipated, I assume from the lack of fiber in our diet.  If you are on a liquid diet for a couple weeks after surgery, you are getting almost no fiber at all.  Even when you start eating pureed foods, you're not getting much fiber.   Without fiber, stuff moves through your large intestine too slow.  Your intestine absorbs water from the stuff that's in there, otherwise you'd have real watery poop all the time.  But if stuff stays in there too long, too much water gets absorbed and your poop gets hard and dry.  Then it doesn't come out easily.

I had no trouble with constipation since my surgery, though, until I started taking a new med for depression about a month ago.  I think that is what has been causing me trouble lately.
