I came across this website today and thought I'd share in case anyone else is interested.  It has all kinds of great info about calcium.

Now, it says that it doesn't much matter if people take calcium citrate or calcium carbonate, which is true for most people.  For us, though, it does  matter and we need citrate because of our RNY.  That's because we have less stomach acid.  This site does explain that stomach acid is needed to absorb calcium carbonate.

Note, too, that as people age they produce less stomach acid, so if you have an older parent who is taking calcium because of osteoporosis concerns, they really should also be taking calcium citrate in order to get maximum benefit from their calcium supplementation. My mom (who is 69 and has confirmed osteoporosis) never received this info from her PCP.
