I am about the same time frame as you are surgery wise. I a 5'10 and 185 right now and I have about 25 pounds to go to goal. I am finding I can eat anything I try. Too many carbs make me queasy, and I don't eat any sweets at all yet (I stay under 15 grams of sugar per serving) but other than that I seem to be able to eat whatever.

I just stick with the calories in, calories out train of thought. If I eat more calories than my body is burning, I am not going to lose weight, in fact, I'll gain. I am working out 5x a week (gym in mornings, karate class 3x a week at night) so that gives me a little more calories to work with.

I never had the surgery so I could NOT eat tons of things...I had a big problem with portion control. Which I don't have anymore. I just make sure I log in my portions and all my foods everyday and be accountable. I have tried things like breakfast tacos, quesadillas, fried fish, corn on the cob, etc., but my normal day is egg whites with veggies or greek yogurt with fruit, some kind of chicken salad or sandwich (usually with no bun) for lunch, and grilled fish/black beans/green beans for dinner. Stuff like that. I've had no sugar added ice cream and it wasn't worth the calories to me. I've tried dark chocolate (80%, less than 5 grams of sugar) and I will eat a square of that now and then.

I have almost completely stopped with the protein shakes. I hated them from the beginning but forced myself to drink them. I just try really really hard to get my protein from food.

From day one I have been amazed at how I can tolerate everything I eat! Nothing I have tried so far makes me sick. I did experience dumping symptoms (didn't actually dump) several times but they were sugar related and I have found that I can tolerate A LOT of sugar before I begin to feel sick; perhaps 30 or more grams of sugar. I was very frustrated in the beginning but as time went on I started to look at it in a different light.

My lack of self control is what got me here so after WLS I wondered why I can still eat everything I want. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and I believe this is a sign that I need to be in control…not my pouch, not my brain and definitely not my mouth! If I can tolerate everything than I need to control what I can tolerate. However, that is much easier said than done, so I have taken one step at a time. If 75% of the time I am making good, healthy choices, I am now MUCH better off than before, when the percentage was 25%. If I can look at a Strawberry Cheesecake, a bowl of chips, an ice cream sundae, whatever it may be and walk away without taking one bite, I am in control! Even if I do take a bite and then walk away, I’m still in control because I was able to walk away. The cravings and the wants will always be there so the self control will have to be there as well.

We are all humans, and we will fall off the wagon, it’s how we get up and get back on it that matters. How we control the wagon during the ride is what defines whether or not we will be successful in this journey.  Don’t be too hard on yourself if you fall off; give yourself room to have a clean fall and you will be a better rider.
