meds and weight gain

MSW will not settle

I am a regular user of high dose steroids and I take multiple meds that cause weight gain.  Its a fact that my meds impact metabolism causing hyperinsulinemia which promotes fat storage even in the presence of a calorie deficit, in part because I am also hypothyroid.

Living with it is unavoidable as I have a chronic condition so I cannot live without the meds.  At times hunger is voratious as are cravings for sweet and salt.  Its a struggle but it can be handled.  I raise my calories on the really tough days and lower them on the easier days.  My calorie goal is a monthly average to maintain ten pounds below my lowest weight.  I still bounce in a fifteen pound range in spite of my diet.   However, its metabolic and the solution has yet to be identified.

I liberally use the dreaded DIET word because I am on a diet for life.  Fat gain is fast and easy inspite of exercise and calorie control.  Loosing is tough inspite of carefully managing my calorie deficit.

You don't want to diet and neither do I.  However, you may not be able to get te relief you need from meds without carefully managing your diet.  Fortunately there are multiple options for depression these days.  In your position I would do some research on meds that don't increase hunger or cause weight gain and ask my doctor if these are an option.  Its what I did for myself.  Unfortunately, having tried multiple options, the worst of the meds for weight gain are the best of the meds for treatment.  I hope you can find meds that serve both purposes well.

Unfortunately I've been on about a million meds already.  Well, not quite a million but more than 30.  Seriously.  I counted all the ones I could recall recently and it was more than 30.  So I'm running out of options.  Those 30 either didn't help or had really severe side effects.  Or both.

I also did ECT not long ago.  I think they told me they typically do about 12 to 16 treatments.  I had 18.  The depression was only slightly improved.  Like, instead of planning to kill myself the next day, I thought I might wait until after the weekend.  And the memory loss was really debilitating.

I will talk to my doc when I see him in a couple weeks about other options as far as meds go.  Hopefully there is something.

Have you ever tried Wellbutrin? It is not supposed to increase appetite or make you gain weight. It is actually supposed to help you to not be hungry. My doc just recently prescribed it to me so i don't know how well it will work for me post-op. I was on it years ago and it did help then. Prior to surgery I was on Elavil (generic name amytryptilne) it was prescribed for both depression and pain. It helped both but I did gain weight on it, was hungry all the time and it caused me to sleepwalk and eat in the middle of the night (which I didn't remember doing but had evidence like crumbs in my bed and wrappers on my nightstand).

I did try Wellbutrin.  Up to 450 mg of it.  Did nothing for me.

Ellavil gave me horrible nightmares.  Horrible.

Ouch. I'm sorry you're going through such a bad time with finding meds that work for you. My thinking is - find the right combo of meds that help you with the depression and then worry about the 'diet' later, you may have to tighten up on some foods (like we could tighten up any further right?) but I'd hate to see you unhappy for much longer, I know how it feels - I seem to have a better support system that replaces meds though and I consider myself blessed to have that.  At least you know we're here! Although, I'm probably further away than your family is.

You can always look me up on facebook =) [email protected]

I understand what you're saying.  And I do think that treating the depression has to be the priority.  But the weight gain issue is all tied into the depression.  I wasn't depressed because I was overweight, but being really overweight did not help my self esteem any.  And I think gaining much weight back would trigger feelings of guilt and further damage self esteem.
