It sounds like the state health plan for GA is going to discontinue coverage of bariatric surgery in 2012...

This will happen more and more as health care changes take place.  That is why in 2009 when this was in the fore front I was as proactive as possible.  I tell folks on the boards who are riding the fence considering having surgery they better be careful because more and more plans will drop this benefit for cost saving measures.  I too have state insurance through teacher retirement.

Doesn't surprise me.  I think I saw something about NC medicaid changing their coverage policies about it also.  The states are broke.  who was it last year that stopped paying for some cancer treatments.

Yep - I see it coming for State of Oregon.  PEBB announced in April they would be charging $500 in addition to co-pay and 15%.  Glad I have had my procedure.

What happened to the theory of wls reducing cost of health care for an individual in the long run? Seems to me they are going backwards not forward... I know a lot of insurance companies and state insurance makes it easier for birth control for cost saving measures as well too...  For a country who prides itself on being a leader on many things...shame on that!  I sure hope this does not go through.

It does seem counter-intuitive. It's sick, but I've heard that as far as pure numbers go, it's cheaper to pay for a very sickly person for a short time than have to pay the costs of a healthy person into old age.

I'm sooooooooooo glad I got in when I did. At the beginning of 2010, my employer no longer offered it as an option. No telling what kind of shape I would be in right now had it not been for WLS.

Surgery Date 9/9/2009
Starting Weight 395
Goal Weight 200
Current Weight 242

153lbs LOST....so far!
