Anyone have multiple surgeries over the years before RYN?
My mom is going to have RYN probably next month. She has had in the past 3 c-sections, a partial hysterectomy, a full hysterectomy, gallbladder and appendix taken out. Has anyone had multiple surgeries and still able to do laproscopic RYN? We are praying for that he said he wont know until he goes in and sees.
Thanks and God bless,
Amanda

I have had many surgeries including the old fashion gallbladder surgery with a 10 inch scar across my middle. My RNY surgeon was a little worried about that scar but it turned out fine, in fact, one of my incisions is right through that old scar. He said he had no problem with any scar tissue.

Adhesions are the main worry with mutliple surgeries but they really vary from person to person - one person might have a lot after one surgery, while another may have few after several surgeries. He really will only know once he goes in and sees.

I did not have multiple surgeries but I did have a total hysterectomy and was cut right across my belly just above my belly button (due to my weight). My surgeon said I had a lot of scar tissue plus a fairly large hernia that he had to move around - said he bent his camera on me! Anyways, the surgery took twice as long (4 hrs) but he was able to do it laproscopically. After surgery my mother asked him whether or not he was able to do it laproscopically and he told her that he is a laproscopic surgeon and he would have considered the surgery a failure if he had to open me up. He said he would rather take the extra time to do it laproscopically because it is better for the patient healing wise. So my advice is to find a GOOD surgeon.
To go along with Kim's comment...the only previous abdominal surgeries prior to RNY had all been GYN in nature. At 10 months post op, I had a partially blocked bowel obstruction resulting from scar tissue. I havent had any further issues. Adhesions can occur when you least expect them. Yes I understand you dont want your Mom to have the open incision, but years ago that was the only way to do the surgery.
I have had 2 c sections..and a abd hysterectomy. All done bikini line. I asked this q to my rny surgeon. He stated he has done surgery on patients of all sorts of surgeries. One surgery has nothing to do with the other. On a diff note. I have heard it depends on size if you have to have open or not. like over 400lbs. Not sure on this just what I heard. Hope helps.
I had gall bladder removal (10 in*****ision-before lap surgery), hysterectomy and colon resection. My torso looked like Zorro and I had a go-around! My surgeon was able to do my RNY laproscopically. It did take much longer though-7 hours. The scar tissue makes moving the instruments more difficult. I had no complications because of it, but I did need an extra week to recuperate because my torso was sore longer than normal.
I've had 2 c-sections and kidney surgery. I was still able to have laproscopic RYN. Everyone is different though. My surgeon told me before going in that I might wake up with one big incision depending on what the trespassers left behind. As long there's no mess in there she should be fine. Good luck to your mom!
I've had 3 1/2 abdominal surgeries...
1/2 Laproscopic - Failed Gallbladder removal
1 Open - Gallbladder removal
2 Laproscopic - Lap-Band IN
3 Laproscopic - Lap-Band OUT!!!!! (Thank goodness!)
When my surgeon evaluated my abdomen in consideration for RNY she said it could be challenging because of the scar tissue but no worries... it'll absolutely be done laproscopically they don't do many open surgiers other than with very high risk patients. Like previous posters... she was able to use my existing scars!! YAY!
