headache when I stand up?

So, I've been getting dizzy when I stand up for a while now.  I think it's low blood pressure but can't figure out what to do about it.  For now, I just get up slowly and stand still for a minute after standing up until the dizziness goes away.

But lately I'm noticing that sometimes, not all the time, but fairly often, I also get a headache when I first stand up.  It's a fairly bad headache and it's right behind my eyes.  It goes away in just a minute or two, about the same time the dizziness goes away.

Anyone had any idea what that might be caused by?  Is there anything I can do about it?

Sounds like your method of standing is right. Are you checking your blood pressure at home? The headache is a bit troubling - lingering side effect of the ECT? Time to see a neurologist?

Hmmm.  I wouldn't think it would be related to the ECT.  It's been, what two months or a little more since my last treatment.

I was checking my blood pressure at home and then my blood pressure thing died and I haven't bought a new one yet.  It's pretty low almost all the time but does drop more when I first get up.  By low I mean anywhere from about 90/60 to about 80/40.

I was suffering from dizziness, and my PCP said it was related to my blood pressure being much lower than it used to be, and that it would take time for my body to catch up.  In addition to a recommendation of getting up slowly, he also recommended squeezing my major muscle groups for 10 seconds before I stood up in order to get the blood flowing.  The dizziness has been reduced tremendously by doing these two things.  I also complained to him that I would get these pressure (that's what they felt like to me) headaches every time the dizzy spell was just about ending and they reminded me somewhat of the migraines I used to get in my 20's.  After a quick exam of pushing on my various sinuses, he told me that I was experiencing sinus pressure headaches due to the added pressure of the blood rushing to my head when I stood up.  Tylenol Sinus fixed me up.

This happens to me all the time. I get the headache right after the dizzy spell. My doc and pcp both believe that it is due to my BP dropping. I was on a beta blocker for pressure and it helped a ton with the dizziness and headaches. Now I just have to watch how fast I get up. They want to see if my pressure will even out since BP meds make my pressure way to low.

I would bring it up to your PCP and see if they think that you may need meds.

This may sound obvious but have you checked your salt level? How about having a boullion cube/soup? That's what my doc suggested when my blood pressure got really low.

I had similar symptoms and I also have low blood pressure (90/54) I got a cardiac check up and nothing was wrong. I was advised to eat more salt, the cardiologist suggested pickles. It has helped me greatly. No more dizziness.

Hi Kelly,
I got that a year out... for me that was the BP issue.  I used to have normal BP before surgery and after was heaving a lot of problem. Dizzy with blacking out at times. Headaches, etc.
I think in my case that was caused due to low levels of minerals: salt, magnesium, etc.   I started using more spices - more salt in my diet.  That helped the BP and overall my stability.  Now - I get headaches when -if I get dehydrated.   And I do drink a lot - but if I do not get enough salt - my body does not want to retain the water.    We all the food I am eating - protein shakes, yogurt, some fruits and veggies - there is just not enough salt - unless I make an conscious effort to add salt to my food and drinks.

I had this issue before however it wasn't my blood pressure at all it was vertigo, Scared the crap out of me I went to the emergency room, the did an EKG and blood work , checked my blood pressure, and my ears and turns out i had some fluid behind my ear drum causing vertigo and my ear never even hurt .It took weeks for the vertigo to go away with a course of antibiotics and medication that was suppose to help with the dizziness but it didn't work. I'm not a Dr, Its a good idea to check your blood sugar and blood pressure.
I hope you start to feel better soon.
