Pain meds w/o Tylenol? Also, going to ask PCP about disability

I don't know if this will help you are not, maybe it's worth a try?

I've been having terrible back pain, which is slowly getting better. I was so miserable on all the pain medications that various doctors presctibed that where narcotics and so on. They didn't work well for my pain and then the sleepy side effects, plus itching constantly didn't help either.

One doctor (my orthopedic) put me on tramadol (I think that's the generaic name). It doesn't contain tylonal I believe, and ended up working much better. It helped my pain much better than anything else they prescribed and since it wasn't a narcotic my PCP didn't mind writting me the perscription with refills. That helped so I didn't have to me miserable in the car and sitting in his office just to get a perscription.

I"m not sure if you have tried that or how it may work for you.

I'm sorry you are going through so much and aren't feeling well. Hang in there and take gentle care. Feel better soon. :)

I actually already take Tramadol (one  2-4 times per day as needed ) for the arthritis in my knees... so occasionally, I have already taken the Tramadol and tehn end up taking VIcodin on top of it (which probably isn;t a very good idea, but since I don't know when the pain will hit, it is sometimes unavoidable).

I appreciate the suggestion (and the support) though!

The new recommendations for Tylenol intake have been lowered to 3000/mg per day.

Along with pain medications (the pain is still there you just don't care)  have they tried anti-spasmodic, anti inflammatory (yep if we have to we can take them just gotta be careful)

There are many drugs that may help potentiate the effects of the narcotics.  Upping the narcotics may make everything worse due to the decreased gastric motility that they cause.

People get in to trouble with narcotics in many ways.

It is easy to get into large doses of narcotics due to tolerance.  By taking pills to avoid having the pain come, (completely understandable- anything to avoid the pain)  It better to take the meds when the pain becomes really bad. (7-8)   Rather than taking at the first twinge.  Pain management's goal is to keep the pain tolerable, not completely relieve the pain.

I hope they figure out the cause.

Is the pain constant, chronic all the time?  Does it come and go acutely?  Like a spasm, lasts awhile then stops?

Hang in there-

We have tried anti-spasmodics (no effect) but have not tried anti-inflammatories not only because of my RNY but because anit-inflammatories interact with the coumadin I take.

I almost always wait until the pain gets bad enough that it is hard to concentrate or the pain distarcts me from everything else.   There are, however, days where I have just had enough of the pain and am not willing to wait for it to get bad and I take the meds much earlier.

I have some low-level discomfort that is more or less constant (but that I can deal with) and one spot that is tender when pressed on, but then I have these intermittent bouts of moderate to severe sharp pain. Sometimes it lasts only a few hours and sometimes it lasts several days; most of the time it is a 1 or 2-day problem.

I ruptured a disc in my back a few years ago and the only thing that really helped was going to the chiropractor.  It really did.  Have you tried that instead of so many pain meds?

No.  I'm not really sure what a chiropractor could do for deep abdominal pain... ?

There is Nucynta (Which works LIKE a narcotic, but has NO narcotic properties... It is like Uber tramadol and is a class 2 drug, but works wonders!)

For severe pain there is also the Fentanyl (Morphine) patch that has NO tylenol in it.

There is also Tramadol and you can go up to 8 per day. (3 at a time every 4 hrs) also works well.

If you have a UTI they specifically MAKE a special pain relieving drug that helps that kind of pain and doesn't contain either NSAIDS or Tylenol. You can even get it OTC at the drugstore.

Good luck!

Warmly,
Jackie
