2 weeks out, what did your NUT say?
So I was just going through all my NUT's information and I can't seem to find a recommendation on how many calories I should be consuming. What did your NUT say?
I'm 2 weeks out and just started eating mushy/pureeds. I never had a problem with protein shakes but man, I grew tired of them. I was hoping to get in all my protein and calories via food but it's clearly not going to happen. I'm going to need to drink a shake a day for awhile until I can get more (1/4 cup now).
So tell me, what did you eat to get some calories and protein in?

My dietician told me not to worry about calories in the beginning, just to eat about 1/4 cup of food four to six times a day and to get at least 60 grams of protein, using protein shakes as needed. She said If I ate the right amount of food and the right amount of protein, the calories should come out OK.
I relied on protein shakes until I was about a year out. I had a hard time getting enough protein from food. I think that was partly because I don't eat meat and half a cup of beans has protein in it but not as much as half a cup of tuna or something. Anyway, now I use shakes when I need them but most days I get enough protein without them.

I eventually started using myfitnesspal.com to track my protein, calories, fat, and carbs just so I had an idea where I stood, but not until I was a week into mushies. I was just concentrating on getting in as much protein and fluid as I could. My first "meal" was fat-free refried beans with shredded cheese melted on, with a little FF plain greek yogurt (like sour cream) and a drizzle of salsa (without chunks). Other favs: ricotta cheese with marinara sauce, tuna or salmon mixed with lite Miracle whip, MOIST tilapia, Wendy's chili. I made SF FF pudding with protein powder and mixed cheesecake SF FF pudding with plain greek yogurt, but both of those were pretty rich for me, so I could only eat a couple of spoonfulls at a time. That's getting better now, so it's easier to get more protein in. I'm still drinking one protein shake a day.
I was told to focus on water and protein and not to worry about calories until I got close to my goal weight. I also came home from the hospital on soft food -- I had one baked, very moist, mild buffalo chicken chunk at 2 weeks out -- and I was eating almost everything except some hard to digest stuff at 2 months out.
Very early out I had one protein shake per day and ate a lot of cottage cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs, FF refried beans, cheese, crab meat, tuna, cod (one of the few kinds of fish otehr tahn tuna that I like), NSA applesauce, SF pudding with protein powder added, RF peanut butter, and baked (or crock pot) chicken.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
At 2 weeks out I was still on liquids and getting in about 200 calories per day. I worked up to 300 by 3 months out, 600 by 6 months out, 900 at 9 months and 1000-1200 by one year out and for maintenance after that. I never did protein shakes as per my surgeon's recommendation - we are to get all our protein from food. Can't do it at first but eventually I got it all in. You can do food only (protein only meals) and be fine. I was on 1/4 cup per meal once I started regular food, and did 1/2 cup by 6 months out, 3/4 at 9 months out and we were to get up to one cup to 1 1/4 cup of food per meal at a year out.I still use that as my guideline. Congrats on being a newbie - sounds like you're doing fine.
