Cheese, do you consider it a carb or a protein?!

I fight with myself on this question most of the time.  If cheese or some kind of 'junk' is an option then say, string cheese would be my choice as it has protein in it.  Other times when jerkey or deli cuts are an option vs or with cheese I consider it a carb more than a protein although the protein IN the cheese counts...

What are your views on this? Do you treat cheese as a carb or a protein..or do you really not think about it?

My NUT calls it a protein, so that's how I count it.

Well, I don't worry about carbs in dairy products.  I don't worry about carbs in beans, either.  I just limit the starchy stuff.

But if I did worry about carbs in cheese, then I gues I would count my cheese as a protein AND a carb.  Just like I count my protein shakes as protein AND as liquid.

Protien....:-)

However, some processed slices I would consider more of a carb than protien...String Cheese is a great protien... Velveeta Slices not a good protien...so look at your cheese options individually.  Some are not worth eating because of the lack of protien...so be careful.

Take care,
Jackie

Thats pretty much how I look at it - usually a protein like in string cheese. I never think twice about string cheese because it's so cheap and yummy AND on our list of do's!  Velveeta...I only do that if my family has tacos because I don't eat the shells/tortillas so I eat some taco meat with about 1oz of velveeta or other type of melty cheese in it ( usually just meat, beans and cheese) or if it's one of the rare times I allow myself to have pasta...I think I've had it...maybe a total of 4 times in a year since my RNY LOL never was a pasta person and even now its only a few bites /shrug/

looks like everyone sees it the same as me - - mostly protein depending on the type of cheese it is :)

The reason many nutritionists want us to limit our intake of cheese is due to the fat content, not the carbs. Cheese is pretty low in carbs -- for instance Boar's Head sharp cheddar cheese has 1 gram of carbohydrates per ounce, with 7 grams of protein. What regular cheese is high in is fat -- Boar's Head sharp cheddar has 9 grams (81 calories) per ounce. That's 73% of the total calories. Switching to a low-fat cheese can save up to  7 grams of fat per ounce of cheese and keeps the protein level high.

Depending on what you get, cheese is primarily a source of fat with a good deal of protein in it. There isn't many carbs in cheese.
