Low carb milk alternative??

Ok, this is my issue and question.........

I'm looking for an alternative to skim milk to mix with my protein shakes.  I don't necessarily like the taste of them when mixed with water.... and that kinda defeats the purpose anyway.  I NEED the calories I get from the milk but I want to do without the carbs.  Any suggestions?

The skim milk I buy has 90 calories, 8g of protein and 13g of carbs per 8oz of milk.  I drink 3 protein shakes every day so it really adds up!! I know when I go on foods (hopefully Thursday) that things will change but I'd like to know what other people do in order to get the carbs under control at the liquid stage.

So..... suggestions?

Thanks in advance!!

That doesn't really seem like a lot of carbs to me.  How many grams of carbs do you want to get in a day?  We actually need some carbs in our diet.

Hi Kelly!
Well 13g of carbs in the milk x 3 shakes a day is 39 grams.  My protein has another 2.5g per scoop so that adds another 7.5 for the day.  A total of 46.5g of carbs.  So yeah, that wouldn't be bad every day.  But if I also have a SF popsicle, they contain 12g of carb.  So on the days that I have one of those, that brings me up to 58 and I'm shooting for 40-50g a day.  If I wanted to have two popsicles, oh boy I'd be WAY over!!

Are my goals of 40-50g of carbs unrealistic?  Pre-surgery I was a carb-aholic so I'm trying to make sure I keep myself on a short leash where they are concerned.  Perhaps the leash is too short?

What are your thoughts?

I don't really know if it's unrealistic or not.  I'm pretty sure I've seen other people post about keeping their carbs that low.  I don't actually count carbs.  I just stay away from the starchy stuff (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes) most of the time.  I eat them sometimes, just not a lot.  I think I would have a really hard time keeping my carbs that low because I don't eat meat so I get a lot of my protein from dairy and beans, which have lots of carbs.  I think it just depends on what works for you.

I second the Hood suggestion!  My Kroger supermarket stocks it right where all the milk is, mixed in with the organic and soy stuff.  It looks like this: http://www.hood.com/Products/prodListColl.aspx?id=851

I use unsweetened soy milk instead of milk for everything.  Pudding won't set with soymilk but I freeze mine anyway so it doesn't matter.

Are you deducting the fiber and sugar alcohol carbs from your total carbs?  You need to be careful of you net carb count not your total carb count.  To get to your net carbs take your total carbs and subtract both fiber and sugar alcohol carbs.
