Do I look like I've gained?

OK, I know you guys can't see me so how would you know if I look like I've gained or not?  But today I had an appointment with my psychiatrist and he asked if I'd noticed any weight gain.  I assumed he was asking because one of the meds I'm on now can cause weight gain.  However, as of today (according to my scale at home) I am four pounds above my lowest weight ever since surgery, and that weight was after I'd been sick and throwing up for a few days.

So he asked me to step on his scale and I did and it said 130.  Which is six pounds more than my scale at home says but whatever.  A difference of a couple pounds does not worry me.  So then he pulls out one of those little cardboard wheels you turn to find your BMI.  And he tells me my BMI is 22-point-something.  Well, 22 is just great for a BMI, isn't it?

Then he writes it in my chart and says "We'll keep an eye on this."  Excuse me?

And you know what happened a couple weeks ago?  I was shopping at Goodwill and the lady that rang me up asked if I was over 50 because if I was, I would get a 10% discount.  Um, I'm not even 40 yet.

So, you know, I was thinking I looked OK but apparently I don't.  Apparently after losing 150 pounds, I look old and fat.

Blah.  I'm not really upset but, I don't know, confused, I guess.

That's crazy! I'd be so mad! At the same time, I would have told her yes. 10% discount is okay by me! My mom did that at a thrift store and had been getting the senior discount for years! As far as him monitoring your BMI, it might be a medicine that you can potentially gain a lot of weight on. I was on a psych med that made me gain 80 lbs in three months. He might have just been worried. He could have been a little more specific in why he was asking though. How rude!

It is a med that can cause weight gain and I haven't been on it very long and I definitely think that's something to watch out for.  I really believe that a big part of the reason I got so big in the first place was due to a medication I was taking.  That wasn't all of it, but I think  it was a big part.  And I have told him in the past that the idea of regaining is scary to me.

It's just the way he did it.  He acted like a BMI of 22 was too high.

I was too shocked I guess to tell the lady at Goodwill that I was over 50 so give me my discount.  Plus my sister was standing right next to me cracking up.

LOL! I would've been shocked too. I about fell over several years ago when I was buying some wine for a party. I was 22 at the time and when I handed her my license, she told me that it wasn't necessary because they only card those who look under 30. Boy was I mad!

Those psych meds are no joke when it comes to weight gain! I remember being os mad about gaining and all my doctor could tell me was that, the more weight I gained, the better it was working. I almost wanted to smack her! I hope you don't gain with this new medicine. I would be scared of regaining too, but don't let anyone tell you that a BMI of 22 is too high! That's awesome!

I've taken some counseling classes and it seems like your psychiatrist could use some bedside manner...Yikes. Sounds patriarchal already.
harumph.

You think this is patriarchal?  Guess he told me one time?  This was a few years ago.

He thinks my partner and I are married.  I've told him multiple times that we are not but yet he always refers to him as my husband.  I don't bother to correct him anymore.

Well, one time he asked me if my husband and I were planning to have children.  I said no.  He asked why and I said, well, we just didn't want to, plus with the meds I am on, getting pregnant would be a bad idea.  Birth defects and all that.  So he said well, I could just stop taking my meds long enough to have a child and then go back on them.

Um, excuse me?  You wanna admit me to the psych ward for nine months?

I told him my husband had a vasectomy.  He looked very sad and shook his head and said he thought I should have at least one child, otherwise I will be lonely when I am old.

I dicussed it with my therapist and we decided it must be a cultural thing.  He is Pakistani.

I live in a small town and there are only three psychiatrists here that take Medicare.  I saw the other two first and they were both total idiots.  One of them told me that Effexor does not cause withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking it cold turkey.  Well, the company that makes it even says it does.

This doc is good at prescribing my meds and he listens to me if I think I need my dose changed or something, so I decided to ignore the inappropriate advice about having kids.

Evidently I look older than I am also and I have two young boys (I am an "older" mom) however it's dishearting when I get comments about being their grandmother OR asked if MY mother is my sister #$#*!*$&.

That is absolutely crazy that your psychiatrist made a comment about your weight and BMI, I'm puzzled.

Oh man, we're once again in the same boat.

I had my first baby at 33 and my second at 35, and when they were toddlers was asked more than once by friendly people on the street if I was giving their mommy a break by taking the grandkids for the day.
Man, that really puts the spring in your step, huh?

And since my mom had me at nineteen, and being overweight I looked older than my age, we have been asked if we're sisters more than once. She just beams.
Me?
Not so much.

I just wanted to say wow. I am confused too.  I  would think the weight flux was probably time of day and being fully dressed,  and I'm going to assume that he said that to keep a watch on your weight to see if the meds are having an effect on you. I think a bmi 22 point anything is good as long as you are not underweight.  Sometimes people can be jerks so pay them no attention, but to give her the benefit of the doubt maybe she was just saying that if you were you could get a discount.  I'm sorry I have nothing else to add.

Well apparently I look pregnant... it is incredible how many people keep asking me that. Sigh.
