no tips, but scared as hell because I am 2 weeks behind you, my surgery was May 2nd and I have not lost any more hair then usual but every time I see even a few strands come out I just want to freak. I have thin hair to begin with....ugg!
I wonder if the rate of our WL has any effect on how much hair we loss. Like, if you are a slow loser so you lose less hair?

There are a couple reasons hair loss is common after RNY.
Hair loss actually can occur after any surgery as a reaction to the anesthesia. It's called telegen efflusium. Um, I might have spelled that wrong. But the way it works is that at any given time, about 10% of your hair is in a "resting phase." It rests for a couple months, then falls out. But the anesthesia can cause more of your hair to go into the resting phase, about 30%. So after a couple months, all that hair falls out.
If we don't get enough protein or some other nutrients after surgery, that can also cause more hair to go into the resting phase. Getting more protein now won't stop hair loss right now but it'll prevent hair loss a couple months down the road.
It'll grow back. I got mine cut short when I was losing a lot because that made it less noticeable.

I am doing all of the recommended things to help with the hair loss, or hair regrowth, since you can't stop the loss. Biotin pill daily, high protein (80-100 grams), and using all the Nioxin products. My hair started falling out at about 11-12 weeks, and I am at 19 weeks and its already slowed up a bit. Plus I can see the new hair growing in everywhere, its funny. I guess the Biotin also makes your other hair grow faster, because I am plucking my eyebrows and shaving my legs daily, and I've gotten an upper lip wax 2x now!
I also went from collarbone length hair to a short inverted bob. I was nervous but I LOVE it and am so happy I did it. My hair looked so scraggly before. Now, I am barely noticing the loss.
It will all be worth it in the end. I have a close friend who had RNY three years ago and she went through losing a TON of hair, cutting it short, being able to see her scalp in some places....and now she has shoulder blade length beautiful thick red hair. She says its even better than before because of all the vitamins and biotin she's taking.

to limit the fall and promote new growth this is what I did:
1. multivitamins, B-complex, biotin (1000-5000 mcg)- no skipping days
2. enough proteins, jello... minimum 80 gr + jello. BTW - if you get the proteins from food - you most likely will absorb less of it... so increase the proteins. (the whey protein in shakes is pre-digested - the best bio-availability). Others - we need to digest and absorb
3. cut the hair shorter and be gentle with it - no pulling, tagging, no rubber bands, etc...
4. good shampoo and conditioner - I use the Nioxin line - shampoo, conditioner and the scalp treatment - I could feel and see the difference - the shampoo is expensive but it really lasts a long time.. You only need a little.

I did the same thing and had minimal hair loss. None of us can predict how much we'll lose. I never stressed about it since I didn't lose chunks of hair. Having very thick, course hair only myself and my hair dresser noticed the loss.
