Will I ever get this shake down?

Sitting here in the hospital....  2 days post op.... drinking my first protein shake since surgery.  Wondering if I'll ever get the whole thing down.  It's been about 30 minutes since they brought it and I swear I've only drank a teensy bit out of it.  It looks HUGE.  Just wondering if I have to get the whole thing down?  I can't even imagine drinking the whole thing.  It looks like its probably about 12 oz.  Surely they don't intend for me to drink all of that ???

UGH

Other then that, post op has been fairy easy (so far).  Going home today after I drink this shake.  Wish me luck!!

Yeah, I remember being in the hospital and they kept bring in trays of stuff for me.  I barley made a dent in one tray and they were bringing me another one!  I don't think they expect you to take in more then 1 ounce every 15 minutes or so.  So use one of those little medicine cups and fill it up.  Drink it in 15 minutes.  Fill it up again and continue until it is gone.

Eventually you will down that whole shake in 15 minutes if you want.  Hard to believe that now, but it's true.

Glad your surgery when well and glad you get to come home today!

I remember how you feel ! But it will get easier when it comes to drinking and like Ginger said use the medication cup so you dont become over whelmed . I still use little cups when I drink and it been 7 months... I happy that your doing good... Good luck and it takes time to get used to this new life style

OMG! That's a great idea! My surgeon didn't allow protein drinks until 3 weeks post op so as not to cause uneccessary nausea. But by then I was no longer using little cups to drink. I am 7 weeks out and have such a hard time drinking the shakes. It just seems like SUCH a large amount...and it's gross. I am totally going to try breaking them into little one ounce shots. Thanks for the idea!

Wow! I was only on an ounce 3 times a day while in the hospital for 4 days! Good luck! Sounds like you are doing good!

I agree with what everyone else says about the 1 ounce cups.  Surprised you are having so much liquid on Day 2??  I wasn't allowed anything by mouth for days 1 & 2.  Then on Day 3 I had the swallow test for leaks, etc.  As soon as I was back in my room my nurse set me up with 4 one ounce cups of the BEST ICE WATER that I have ever tasted, lol.  Then she gave me 4 more and 4 more until the 16 were gone.  Then I took a nap and headed home :-)

All docs seem to have different protocols.  I was giving tons of liquids on day one.  Shortly after being moved to my room, they gave me a cup of water and a 20 oz clear protein drink.  Later that day I got two sugar free popsicles and some diluted fruit juice.  I got pretty much the same stuff on day two.  Then I went home - there was no day three for me.

Sip slowly.  Gradually over time you'll be able to drink more at one sitting.  Pour a little in a cup at a time.  If you blend your own protein drinks - then you can add extra protein powder and get more protein in per sip.
