Question for insulin dependent diabetics

I am scheduled for my surgery on 16 Aug and on 2 Aug i will start my liquid diet.  I was wondering, did anyone have any problems during their liquid phase with low blood sugars?  I did a mini (1/2 day) liquid tryout yesterday and by lunchtime i felt very light headed and realized my sugar levels were very low.  I had to drink a normal soda!  I'm worried about what will happen when i am on the pure liquid diet with no sugars added.  Any advice?

I had  RNY 5 months ago and am on an insulin pump- had to drastically reduce insulin when on liquid pre-op. I would make sure to ask your surgeon or endo-- VC

Thank you for that information. I will be sure to bring that question up at my appointment next week!

Are you type one or type two?  Both can be insulin dependant, but will react differently to the surgery based on the ability of the pancreas to produce or not produce insulin.

You will need to work with your endocrinologist to adjust your insulin in the beginning.  It is better to have a little higher sugars until you get it adjusted properly.

I took 250 units of Humalog per day and 250 units of Lantus per day.  After two weeks, I was completely off both.

Thanks Steve for your response - I am actually tpe 2 and take 40 units of Lantus along with a few other pills.  I hope that, like you, I am able to come of all of the diabetes meds - especially the insulin.  I will be sure to speak with my doc about this next week.

while you were going through the pre-op did you have any unpleasurable experiences related to the diabetes and the decrease in the insuln/meds during that time?
