iron and calcium

There was a thread earlier today about whether or not you can take calcium and your multi at the same time and I saw a few responses that said not if there is iron in your multi because the iron keeps you from absorbing your calcium.  I just wanted to make sure everyone understands that it is calcium that keeps you from absorbing iron, not the other way around.  So even if your multi has iron in it, you can take your calcium with your multi as long as you understand you won't absorb most of the iron.  You WILL absorb the calcium.

Apparently iron and calcium get absorbed in the same spots in your small intestine but calcium molecules or whatever they are happen to be bigger, so it beats iron.

Thanks Kelly, I was wondering which one affected which. On a not completely related topic, how much time do I need to leave in between my calcium pills. I know we can only absorb 500mgs at a time, but what it the minimum amount of time between taking pills. Would two hours suffice?

Kelly, you are so close.  In the case of iron and calcium, cellular uptake is like a lock and key, with the receptor site being the lock and calcium or iron being the key.  Calcium and iron are shaped ALMOST identical and both will fit into the receptor site.  However, calcium is a more perfect fit and has what is called a better affinity.

I'm grateful for this post. It made me take a look at the ingredients in my multivitamin.
My MV has NO iron!
I am postmenopausal so no more cycles, but I still need SOME iron, don't I?
Kelly, how much do you suggest?

BTW, my MV is Centrum Silver

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric surgery suggests 36 mg iron a day for men and women that don't menstruate.  (They suggest 54-63 mg a day for women that do menstruate).

Kelly,  I just want to make sure I've got this right.  It IS okay to take the heme iron with calcium, isn't it?  I thought that's what you had said - but now I feel like I need to double check.

Still freaked out about this massive supplement thing I've got going on and all of the different
"do's and don'ts).

I certainly HOPE it's okay because that's one of the reasons I used when I was selling my hubby on paying so stinkin' much for this stuff (the heme).

Oops, yes, it IS ok to take  heme iron with calcium.  I should have mentioned that when I posted this.  Heme iron has different rules.  I always forget about it for some reason.  But you're right, you can take it with calcium.
