How ARE you doing it??

I know how you feel.  Yesterday, I had 5 people at work comment on my weight loss (43 pounds!) and one person asked how have I been doing it?

I told her I am eating less (true) and exercising (true again!).  Myself personally, I do not want people to know I had surgery.  Of course, my family, close friends and some close co-workers know, but that's it (I had to let my immediate supervisors know due to my being out of work for 3 weeks).

One woman that I work with came up to me the other day and finally told me she put two and two together; surgery, weight loss, but I did tell her yes, I had the surgery.  She has been so nice about it, helping me with any questions I have because she has many family and friends that have had this surgery, so she's pretty well aware of this.  She also understands why I don't want to let people know.

I guess with me, having a life long problem with weight, it has been so difficult emotionally, I just felt that people don't need to know my business about this.  If and when they do put two and two together, then I'll decide if I will tell them or not.  This is just a personal choice for me.

Congrats on your loss.  You are doing a great job!!  It sure makes it all worth it when not only can you see a difference but others can as well.

I tell people but that is me. And I too have gotten the attitudes where it is the easy way out. When that does happen I talk to them about what we all really go thru and how it is anything but easy. Most times they walk away with a better grasp on it. I think so many times why people think all the horrible thoughts about this surgery is because they only hear the horror stories. So I love spreading the good side if it.

You took the words right out of my mouth!

I tell everyone who asks about my surgery, and some who don't ask. LOL.   If they respond negatively, I school them.

The only way public perception of WLS will change is if we stop acting as if it's shameful ourselves.

I guess I'm just an out and proud WLS patient. Haha. Should I stage a march?

I told no one this time, because I am a revision from lapband and everyone was so judgemental that I failed at lapband surgery.  I just tell people that ask me now that I made some serious changes.  I work hard at making good choices everyday.  I eat six small meals a day, gave up processed carbs and drinking, and exercise everyday.  That is still part of  the truth.  Because it is hard work using our tool.

I don't care what people know/think about me, but I'm not a big talker so my response is usually "I worked my a$$ off" its a general response and not a quick fix so no one wants details!  And I don't know how anyone could possibly say that WLS is the easy way out, it's just a tool to climb the mountain!
