Never thought I would want MORE pain, but... (just venting)

I can definitely exaggerate a bit -- because, as you said, THEY cannot judge/evaluate MY pain -- but I share the surgeon's concern that unless he goes in during a full blown attack, he may not find what he is looking for... and after 4 surgeries (3 open (RNY, hernia, TT) and 1 lap (gallbladder)) in 4 years, I want this one to be the LAST one and to have the best shot at solving the problem when he DOES go in.

Hi Lora...
I would classify severe pain if you have to take vicodin to feel bearable.  But I do understand your dilemma. Been there - done done. Live with intermittent pain for 10 months before I was so tired of it that I let me doc cut me open again. Like you - I was afraid that he may not find anything and I get the "label".  After the surgery, still on drugs - when I woke up my first question to the nurses was if they know if he found anything.  I was so happy (stupid no?) when they told me that I had large hernia and twisted insides, and that he was able to fix that.

Good luck babe.

I am dealing with the same thing right now.  My dr. wants to do the exploratory surgery and I keep putting it off because I am also afraid of what they won't find.  but I am also worried that if it something that needs to be fixed, I may be doing more damage to myself by not having the surgery.  It is a hard decision and I am not crazy about having another surgery.  I had a complete blockage last August from scar tissue and had surgery.  They thought that would cure the pain but within one week the pain was back.  so now it is up to me to figure out when to have the surgery.  But my Dr. didn't say anything about having to be in a certain amount of pain to do the surgery.   My pain is intermittent and only last about5 or 10 minutes.  But it is horrible during that period of time.  The fact that this has been going on for 18 months is enough reason for him to want to do the surgery.

Get the surgery. I waited 10 months. By that time the hernia was big.  He had to put a mesh to that and do double stitching. I would have much better life if  I ahd the surgery a few months earlier.. (less pain).

I am slowly coming to that conclusion.  It is just hard with work and everything to be down for yet another surgery.

Vent and ***** away.  I can't imagine how it must feel to have been dealing with this for SO LONG.  Somehow just NOT knowing what it is seems like it would make it much worse; when you know what you're dealing with it loses some of its power.  Right now, you are just stuck and I really wish they could at least define what you are suffering from.

Don't have any words of wisdom - just hope you get it all straightened out soon and feel better.=)

Lora,

I am sorry to hear that you are in such pain. I know that we can't go to the doctor for every little pain, but it seems like you have been reasonable about the pain. Having to leave work two days in a row should be a flag that it could be something of concern. I know you don't want the exploratory surgery either, but I hope if this continues, that the doctor will check it out to make sure that it isn't anything that needs to be taken care of.

It is hard when our health affects our social life. I hope you start feeling better and will be able to enjoy your events. You are in my prayers.

I am SO sorry you're dealing with this dilemma - so vent away!! My first thought would be to lie to the dr but I can understand you wanting to be prudent. Guess manageable pain is better than severe pain, right?

I have been going thur the same thing and I had my gallblatter taken out over 10yrs ago, but somehow they just found a stone in my common duct. after alot of CAT Scans and xrays they did a MRCP (type of MRI) and found it. I have to go back and see 2 more Dr's with the Navy and then will be set for surgery. I wish you the best of luck.
