how much iron do you take?

What I would like to know is, if your iron and ferritin levels are both good, how much iron are you taking?

I suspect I have an iron deficiency and about a week ago I did increase the amount of iron I take but the things that make me think I have a deficiency haven't improved at all yet.  I get labs done tomorrow so in a few more days I'll know if it is my iron or something else.

I know what the ASMBS says we should take, and I've been getting that much all along.  Now I'm doing more.  But I was wondering how much others have ended up needing to take in order to keep their levels good.  Like, is the amount the ASMBS recommends adequate for most people?  So if you know your levels are good, how much do you take?

My iron was normal but my ferritin was low at 10.  I was taking four 60 mg tablets of Bariatric Advantage iron a day.  I had my first IV iron infusion today.  I am also now taking five 60 mg tablets a day.  We'll see how my levels turn out.  I just ordered Tender Iron from Vitalady, to see if those work better for me.

Let us know how your levels turn out.

Wow, so you were taking A LOT of iron and your ferritin was really low still.

Last time I had labs done, I'd been taking 50 mg carbonyl iron a day with vitamin C.  My iron was in the middle of the normal range.  I forget exactly what my ferritin was, but it was fantastic.  A little over 200.  That was about eight months ago.   I just upped the iron recently to 75 mg a day.

I was looking at my labs from BEFORE my RNY two years ago, and my ferritin was kinda low then already.  I was a vegetarian years ago and did NOT eat healthy.  I suspect that's why my ferritin was already on the low side and even more so now.

WOW, your ferritin was over 200?????  That's in my dreams!   LOL

Yeah, I just checked my spreadsheet I track my labs on.  My ferritin was 222 eight months ago.

I've also been a vegetarian for about 25 years.

It sounds like you are a GOOD vegetarian judging from your posts.      I ate terrible.  At first I tried to combine proteins.  Then I got sloppy and lived on pasta and junk.  Just basically became a "non-meat eater".

I guess I was a "good vegetarian" in some regards, but obviously had some issues since I got heavy enough to need WLS.  I guess I got enough protein and iron, but I also got way too  much fat and calories.

I take 150mg once a WEEK in addition to the 36mg that are the two multivitamins that I usually take daily (sometimes I get bored and take alternate chewable multi's just for a flavor change, and one of the other two I take has no iron) and my labs are fine.  I had a hysterectomy in 1995, though, so that DOES make a difference...

I take 50 mg of iron a day. I just checked and it says its in the form of "amino acid chelate". Is this an okay kind to be taking? I haven't done labs in a while. Doing them this week so I'm not sure if I'm low.
