I was just online ordering my vitamins (the ones I buy online, anyway) and drugstore.com has Sundown Perfect iron, 200 tablets, 25 mg each, on sale for $5.29 a bottle right now.

Pre-op  I always had issues with my iron.  December 2010, my ferritin tanked to it's lowest 5.  I used Sundown carbonyl and got my iron up to a normal range.  I believe it was around 13.  Not high, but so much better.  I was pretty consistant and aggressive with it - took with vit C.

I'd be interested in what people will say here.  During the time I used it, I had no diet restrictions at all.

Best,
Leila

Food Lion (grocery store) carries these exact vitamins.  They are buy one bottle get one free this week, meaning two bottles cost around $5.00 total.  They have them on sale a lot.  I use this brand thanks to Kelly's advice.

I am confused I thought that we could only use ferrous fumarate, ferrous sulfate, or ferrous gluconate!!!

Nope, and it's my understanding that we actually absorb carbonyl iron better than those.

Ferrous sulfate requires a high degree of stomach acid to break apart into usable form so that is why I don't take it.

Carbonyl iron is elemental iron so there is no breakdown and it is better on the stomach

1st - really love your new avatar - you look great!

2nd - How much iron are we supposed to be taking?  My surgeon asked me how much I was taking and said that it sounded wrong -- I take feosol carbonyl 45mg per day.  Enough for someone without deficiency?

The ASMBS says menstruating women should take 54-63 mg iron a day and everyone else should take 36 mg a day.  You should adjust that based on your labs, of course.

Now, they are talking about elemental iron.  Carbonyl is all elemental iron.  Ferrous sulfate, however, is not.  It's a little bit of elemental iron and a lot of iron salts.  So with ferrous sulfate, 325 mg equals just 65 mg elemental iron.

Your surgeon might be used to people taking ferrous sulfate and that might be why the amount you take sounded wrong to him.  If you took 45 mg ferrous sulfate, you'd be getting almost no actual iron at all.
