My protein made me sick.
I made a syntha 6 vanilla protein shake with milk and tried to drink it and it made me SO sick. I feel so discouraged because I was really set on getting all my protein in but it seems like all of them just make me sick. I can't stomach the fruity ones either. UGH. I am not getting in enough protein.
What kind of sick? Like: "I didn't like the smell of it, so it turned me off", or like "It made me projectile vomit" sick?
Are you having trouble with other milk products?
Have you tried any non-dairy based protein (like an egg based one)?
Have you tried using protein powder in food vs drinking it (for ideas see eggface or bariatric foodie)?
I drank around five sips and I just felt nauseous and I knew if I had more it would probably make me vomit. I haven't had any problems with milk based products before so I don't think it's that. Maybe I should get egg based protein and mix it with almond milk.
I haven't tried mixing it in food either.

just becasue before you had no problem with milk - it does not mean you won't have problem now. Then be fine the next day. then get sick again. It is the pouch... and a lot of us see that. One day - food is fine, the next - make you sick. and so on...

Oh, OK... so that's not really sick, you just didn't like that protein powder made that way. That's good news, it means you have lots of options you haven't explored yet. I would try the following things with that same protein powder:
- Try it in a hot drink by mixing the powder with a little bit of cold milk and then topping it off with coffee in the morning, or mixing it in a little bit of cold water or milk and topping it off with sugar free hot chocolate.
- Try incorporating it into a more extensive protein shake recipe (once again, see eggface or bariatric foodie for suggestions
- Try to mix it with water or yogurt to see if it might just be the milk.
- Try to cook with it
And while you're doing that, go seeking samples of other kinds of protein powder. You'll find the right one eventually. Early on I hates most of the ones I tried, found Syntrax nectars and fell in love. Over the months I found my tastes changed and I could use the others too.
Get creative! try lots of things out! and in the meantime, find a way to choke it down. if you don't get your min protein you could stall, heal improperly, lose more hair than you need to.
Ok, so make a much smaller amount and drink it 5 sips at a time. (That might sound snarky, but it truly is not meant to be, since you MUST find SOME WAY to get more protein!) I also second the idea of perhaps trying a non-whey based (soy, perhaps) protein powder....

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
yep. what lora said.
I could not find a protein I could even STAND for the first 2 years. So I made my shakes with as little water as possible, (like only an ounce or 2, just enough to make them liquid) and drank them like medicine.
No fun. But it works. And medicine is really what protein is for us, especially early out.
PS. There is hope! At about two years a newbie suggested a way to make my shakes and now I LOVE them. I tweaked what she said a little, but it has made all the difference in the world and my shakes are now at least 8 oz and usually more because I use lots of crushed ice.
Good luck. You'll find a way. Just don't give up - your life depends on it.

it may be the milk. I can't drink milk - unless it is raw whole milk and then maybe 1-3 oz in my coffee. Milk has too much sugar for me.
I do well with Unsweet Almond milk.
Nectars - I could not drink them. Too much foam and the smell was a turn off...
You need to get samples - lots of samples. And try until you find the one that is OK.
Also - at the beginning of my journey - I had to drink the really slow - and they ha dto be thin. Otherwise I would get nausea, and would hate even the good shakes. Even now, if I try to drink my shake too fast - I get nausea.
Too much air in the shake - (blending too long) - I get nausea. yeap. 3 years post op. Learn what works and what does not.
BTW: I need to get 120-160 gr proteins per day... so I do need my shakes...

The protein powder I use says to use 2 scoops per 8 ounces of water for 56 grams of protein. I've never been able to do it because it makes me nauseous. I have to only use one scoop per shake and drink them two times a day (three per day in the beginning.) Maybe using a smaller amount of protein, more often will help you too.
