You can't take IRON with your calcium. If your multi-vitamin does not have iron, you can take it with your calcium. That's why I use Centrum Silver. No iron. I take my iron seperately right before I go to bed.

The multi and the calcium do not cancel each other out.

If there is iron in your multi, the calcium will cancel out the iron.  However, you'll absorb everything else in the multi just fine.

OMG! I had no idea that gastric bypass patients have to take so many supplements.

--calcium
--iron
--B12
--mulit vitamin
--biotin
--probiotic

Is this just a partial list? Is there anything else?

Sorry if this seems like a total newbie question, but I've just started my research into WLS. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Katie - you know my saga of chewables,  so I finally switched over to swallow vitamins and hopefully that change will be ok in my labs next month. Seems like quite a few people on Centrum. The only thing chewable I do is the calcium chews and they're so yummy that I feel like I'm eating starburst thruout the day. Yeah, it's swallowing a lot of pills but I do end up drinking alot of liquids with the vitamins so it's a win-win.

Not trying to lecture, but I have a friend who had bypass a few years back and was not taking her vitamins.  She knew she should but didn't.  Anyway she is hanging out at a local bar with her girlfriends on a very popular night for singles, only to pass right out at the bar!!  She got up, passed out again, sat and drank some water thinking it was the one beer she had and tried to walk to the bathroom and passed out a third time! Finally they called EMS and had her taken to the emergency room.  Talk about embarrassing, not to mention totally avoidable!  She ended up being severly anemic and Vitamin D deficient.  She had to get infusions in the hospital!!  She is now trying to incorporate them into her daily routine.  Taking vitamins is not an option, we all knew this when we signed up for this.  Try different things that you can tolerate, may take some trying but you will find a routine that works for you.  You will get there!  No one is perfect, we can all just do the best we can daily!  Good luck to you:)

Ritualize it. Match taking your vitamins with things you do at different times of the day. I have my thyroid and B12 as soon as I get up (can't be taken with iron or calcium). I have my first calcium with my second cup of coffee. I have my iron and multi with my mid-afternoon snack. I have my second calcium with my evening protein drink, and I take additional calcium when I head to bed. What are the predictable things you do every day and how can you match your vitamin intake to them?

I generally take my vits with my meals. I take my multi, omega, b12, d3, magnesium, probiotic and first calcium after breakfast. Then after lunch I have another d3 and calcium. After supper another d3 and calcium. Then I take my vit c and iron right before bed. My problem comes in on weekends when my schedule isn't as tight and I might not get in 3 meals in a day.

I agree with the others to try different vitamins. And take them after you eat something that you know doesn't make you sick. Good luck and take care!
