Kelly...I am so glad you are reaching out.  The isolation only seems to magnify our depression and I know that in my case, getting enough sleep is critical.  I think everything else can seem more manageable when sleep issues are under control.  I hope you find some concrete answers today.  Keep searching.  You are such a valuable resource on this site and  have so many people keeping you in their hearts and minds.

Kelly, Remeron is a good anxiety medicine that helps with sleep as well. I've been taking it for years.

I hope you feel better soon

Remeron is notorious for causing weight gain!  I was on it for a month pre-op and when my PCP found out what the psychiatrist had prescribed, he hit the ceiling and called the psychiatrist to have it changed immediately (and asked him what he was thinking when he prescribed it to someone who was already 300 pounds).

It helps so much with my anxiety, i wonder if there is anything else that would do just as good with out weight gain being a side effect

Obviously a psychiatrist would be the one to ask.  Not many physicians still prescribe the tetracyclic antidepressants, but perhaps one of the other ones would be more suitable as far as the weight issue. (Remeron is actually sometimes prescribed specifically as an appetite stimulant!)

Unfortunately, the "straight" anxiolytics (the benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, Valium)) are very habit forming.  Paxil, which is an SSRI, is often prescribed for a combination of depression and anxiety, though...

I just wanted to warn you about the Remeron since some people who already have weight issues don't associate any weight gain with the drug, and after surgery the last thing you want is a drug that is stimulating your appetite!

To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over again the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives. -- Thoreau

A smart woman takes what she needs, where she finds it.
Your RL support may be small, but you know where to find it whenever you need it.

I second what someone said above; you give a lot here, and are appreciated by many for it.

BTW, insomnia is one of the worst, most emotionally draining places to be. I went through a lengthy bout in my mid twenties, and still shiver remembering being awake in the silence when the whole rest of the goddamn city was asleep, gone.  I really tested some friendships during those years, pre-internet, with 4am phone calls.

I'm on nightly Trazodone now, and it's my little pharmaceutical angel.
