what do we need selenium for?

I see some people talking about taking Flintstones, or regular Centrum chewables, neither of which contain selenium.

According to the Office of Dietary Supplements, people that have had intestinal surgery generally need to take selenium because we won't absorb enough from food.

What happens if we don't get enough selenium?

Heart disease, poor function of the immune system, thyroid disorders, higher risk of some cancers, and a particular type of brain disorder or mental retardation.

Do those Flintstones still sound like a good idea?

200% of the RDA, which I don't know how much that is off the top of my head.

My bottle says 70mcg is 100% so I'm good by taking my 2 a day.

The only thing I don't like about the regular Centrum chewables is the lack of Selenium... so I use both the regular and the Centrum Silver chewables (which I actually like the taste of better, anyway).

My Dr recommends Flinstones, 2 a day...if theyre so bad why do some dr's recommend them? I personally take Chewable Centrum orange...i HATE them but flinstones just didnt seem like enough. I also take sublingual B12 1000mg every other day and thats all Im on so far. I have my 2 mo post op blood work next week tho so we will see if I have to add anything. Isnt Selenium also important for nails/hair?

I don't know why some docs recommend them.  I guess you'd need to ask your doc.  I'm assuming because he's not familiar with the ASMBS guidelines and hasn't read the label on the Flintstones bottle.

You're not on any calcium?  No iron?

Please, educate yourself about the vites we need.  It seems your doc is not doing that for you.

I agree!  I have learned SO MUCH from you ladies/guys on OH because all my Dr recommended in his packet was..(paraphrasing)

For first month post-op you must have chewable vitamins...after one month you can switch to pills.  We recommend you purchase a children's complete with iron (examples are Pokemon with iron, Flinstones with iron, Centrum Children's with iron, and Centrum Adult Chewable Vitaimins or Centrum liquid) You should take two vitamins per day.

Vitamin B12....they recommended 1,000 mcg per day.

Calcium...1000 mg

I knew early on I would not be ok with taking Flinstones so I got the Centrum Silver w/out iron after reading how the iron and calcium should not be taken together.  I was just so shocked to see how little was instructed regarding the vitamins after what I have read on here.  I would rather be safe than sorry, that is for sure!

My husband and I are still in shock over the nurse at the anesthesiologists office for my pre-op last wk...she too had the surgery about eight yrs ago and she says all that was ever recommended back then was two Flintstone's and two Tums per day.  I was like WHAT????  And she said that is all she takes still.  Now this is a nurse that works with anesthesia for WLS patients you would think she would be better informed!!  Then she went on to talk about how her hair thinned out and never came back full and thick and I was like,  "YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT WHAT VITAMINS YOU ARE LACKING!!"  ha ha  She didn't seem worried and even joked with her assistant how she craves and eats sweets.  Not a great example of someone working with WLS patients that is for sure!!  And her take on more people needing the D3 now is that people spend less time in the sun these days due to fear of skin cancer, having to work more, etc.  She did not attribute it at all from lacking it from not eating as much or absorbing as much.

My doc recommends Centrum Silver chewables or BA or Celebrate vitamins.  I didn't know that was the difference was between regular Centrum chewables and the Centrum silver chewables.  Good to know, thanks!
Why do some docs recommend Flinstones?  I didn't think they were even good enough for adults that HAVEN'T had surgery.
