Poll for those who find eating breakfast hard

Even at three years out I’m learning about my pouch.

Something happened to me last night and I wondered if what I learned from it might help some of you.

Basically, I’ve been trying to scale back my eating. I’ve decided that even though I am perfectly fabulous the way I am, I really would like to get to my goal weight. I think of it like a gift I am giving myself. I can imagine the pride I’ll feel when I post about having done it and hopefully doing it this far out will help others to understand that even if your surgery doesn’t take you all the way there, you can still do it!

So I have about 30 lbs. left to lose. I can’t be mad at that. Before surgery I had 180 lbs. to lose.

Anyhoo…so last night I got the munchies. I am a BIG night nosher. I don’t know if it’s because I’d just gotten finished watching the Biggest Loser finale or what but I said to myself, “Self? Make a protein drink instead of having food."

I hadn’t had much protein all day so I made an iced protein mocha (see yesterday’s dinner thread for details on that), drank it, felt very satisfied and went on about my evening. Didn’t eat again before bed.

Next morning. Now usually I eat straight out of bed. I’m pretty active so this kicks my metabolism into gear (and, because I am neurotic, I have a GoWear so I can say this pretty definitively). Usually eating breakfast right out of bed does not bother me. It took some cajoling of the pouch to make that the case but that’s how it is now for me. I needed to eat right after waking up, so I made it so. Usually I don’t feel hungry again until lunch.

This morning? Couldn’t do it. Could. Not. Do it. The pouch said “No, no, no!!!"

I tried taking a bite of something (which sometimes works). Nausea! It took a LONG time to be able to eat something. I didn’t work out this morning so it’s not a tragedy, but then I got thinking about the last time it was hard for me to eat breakfast early. It was back when I’d end my day with a protein supplement. So now I’m wondering if there is a link.

If you are more than a few months out (because newbies, sorry, but your morning pouch problems were probably going to be there anyway) and find it hard to take anything in at breakfast, are you doing a protein drink/supplement as your last intake of the previous day?

I’m just curious. Thanks for listening!

That's interesting.  I can't eat breakfast early I have to drink something warm before food will even go down and breakfast is usually something soft (boiled egg, yogurt, oatmeal, cottage cheese).

Keep us updated how the night time shake works for you.  I'm just getting back to adding a shake or two in since my protein intake has suffered lately and my body is feeling it.

Thanks! But are you saying you do NOT have a protein supplement as your last intake of the day? Just want to make sure I am understanding correctly.

I purposely made it a lighter drink (it's basically protein, water and coffee) as opposed to a shake so it's interesting that it may have had that effect. The research continues...

I wasn't doing them at all.  The past 2 days I've done an iced coffee with vanilla protein to increase my intake.

I AM interested in your findings on this and will watch myself to see how the night time protein shake affects me.

Nik, I do a protein supplement as my last intake of the day about 5 days out of 7, and my pouch is willing to take in food early IF I've already had 16-32 oz of water, and IF it's slider (greek yogurt with preserves or peanut butter). After that, I'm fine the rest of the day.

It's like that for days I do have the shake at the end, and days when I don't, so I've always just figured it was a not a morning pouch.

Nik,

I'm five months out, and doesn't matter what I have to eat at the end of the day, in the morning, my pouch does not like food.  I can drink anything (preferable a strong coffee with non-fat half/half and splenda), but I usually can't eat before 11'ish.  Maybe I'm still considered a newbie?  I've never been a big b-fast eater my whole life, so maybe it's just a carry on of that as well.

My supper every night is greek yogurt with whey isolate protein.  I can't do food in the morning - always have a hot protein latte with 1 scoop Click.  That keeps me full  until noon.  I'm never hungry in the morning -  usually not hunger after supper either.

Don't know if that helps.  I'm not much of an eater and don't like much variety of food.

On days when I eat dinner before my evening work out I do come home and have a protein hot chocolate.  That's usually around 9pm or so.  I have no problem eating breakfast - most of the time breakfast is your portion control protein cheesecake at 8am.  I've never had a problem eating breakfast though.  I'm 9 months out now.

I do have a protein supplement before bed, too. I make it with Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, protein powder and milk along with flavorings. I also start the day with a protein decaf coffee drink. I have done this pretty much from the beginning, at least 3 or 4 months out. I don't usually eat solid food for several hours.

It really does not matter for me.  My pouch typically hates any food in the morning

If I had a really light day - then the next day I can start eating earlier... so if my last meal of the day was a protein drink - then I most likely can eat 1 hr after waking up.
The more "dense" protein food I eat at night - then I need to wait longer the next day (some days even till lunch) before I can eat "real" food.
