VERY VERRRRY Discouraged

So I had my last appointment with the med doctor ( Had to complete 7 visits for CIGNA). I have been nervous from the beginning of this journey but am also very excited to start my new life. I am only 25 and have so much I want to do once this weight is gone.

Today the doctor told me that I would only lose 1/3 of my weight....which would mean about 100lbs and that includes the 20lbs Ive already lost! Yes 100lbs is better than nothing but I feel that taking such a permanent step wont be totally worth it if I still weigh between 190-200lbs.

The reason I am making such a drastic decision is because I am so sick and tired of being overweight. I have been heavy my whole life and I just want a chance to live life normally.

Is there anyone on here that started around 300? Where are you now? I feel like 80lbs isn't enough. I know lots of people who have done better than that....Just looking for a little reassurance that this wont be a mistake in the end.

I don't think there is any way to predoct how much weight you will lose. I think it has more to do with how well you follow your new eating plan and how you incorporate the required lifestyle changes into your daily life, such as excersize.

I started at 280 lbs, and while is not 300 lbs is damn near close to it, and I have lost almost 130 lbs and I am on month 10. So basically I will most likely lose more since I am not even a year out.

What I suggest is doing more research and reading about success stories and giving this some hard thinking to decide if is truly for you or not. My goal wasn't to lose X amount of weight, it was to become healthier and to feel "normal" again.

There are also physicians out there who will tell you that you will only lose weight during X amount time frame, but the truth is, if we wanted to lose weight even after that time frame, we could... it is all on the effort we put into this... also at the end of the day, losing 100 lbs is still better and healthier than not. :)

Good luck!!

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

Dont get down b/c of this. my doc told me that his goal is based on loss of 50% of extra fat... and he expects people to get to the point 1 year out.... well i call BS

I had rny 12-15-10 so 5 months out. i started at 280 and am 197 right now. My Docs goal is 182 so that puts me 15 pounds away from my "1 year goal"

It CAN BE DONE IF YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO IT.

My personal goal would be 150-160

They are just giving you stats.  My NUT did the same thing we had to fill out a paper and one of the questions was what do you want your goal to be and I said 150 and she said well you have to be prepared that you might only get to 210-200.  They give you an average of all their patients.  The average % of weight most people lose after surgery.  On average most people don't lose 100% of their excess weight.. "on average" NO ONE said you have to be average!

I'm just 2 months out and I've already lost 30% of my excess weight.. 30%!!! Good luck!!

I started at 330lbs as of the day of surgery. I have been told that I should be able to lose 100lbs in a year. My target weight is 210. I am five months out and have lost 60lbs

I think this is a wonderful time in your life to get it done. I wish I had made this gutsy a decision back then. I finally got it done at 35.  You should lose the weight to keep yourself away for comirbidities like diabetes, high cholesterol, blood pressure, depression, and acide reflux.  (I had all of them). After the surgery, I only have bipolar disorder left to go. I probably will deal w that for the rest of my life.

At the end of the day, YOU are in control of what you lose not your doctor :)

What type of surgery are you having?  My doc told me I would lose about 70% of my excess weight.  I was about 120 overweight so that was 84 pounds.  I lost about 105 pounds and have bounced up about 8 pounds so I have lost about 75 percent.  My math is not perfect as I would have to take off my shoes to be more accurate.

So, maybe you need to ask him in a different way about how much you will lose.  I wonder if there was not a misunderstanding.  However, if it is a procedure that is not as drastic, that is possible I suppose.

Good Luck

Thank you guys for the quick replies! It really does make me feel better. I know this is the surgery I NEED to have. Ive never had surgery before so yes, it is very scary but I have always known this is what I need to do.

Just when the doctor said that today it really threw me off and made me feel down and depressed. I have been watching most of you through your personal journeys since last year and have watched you all be so successful and I just hope to have the same success. I plan on working VERY HARD to get to a normal healthy weight...I know this is my one chance to live the life I want to live. I think the doctor must be a little off. My surgeon told me I should expect about a 120lb weight loss. I'd take his word over the medical doctors....but I also wanted all of your opinions as well. Thank you again!

PS- I am a Type A personality and have a really hard time with "the unknown". I have to be in control of my own body and plan things out. Obviously this surgery is the opposite of that so......lets just say its been tough lol

I think some docs try to make sure not to over-promise. My PCP was all for me having the surgery and I remember her saying, "Just think, by June you'll probably be in the 170s!" Cool, but it's May now, and I'm already at 168. ;)

If you're Type A, you know how to put together a plan to get you where you want to go. The surgery will make it a heck of a lot easier to get there.
