Serving Sizes and Nutritional Value

Since we eat probably 1/4 or so of what the average person eats, how do you figure nutritional values based off of the serving sizes on packages?

If you eat 1/2 a serving, you 1/2 the calories, fat, sodium, vitamins, whatever.  If you eat 1/4 a serving, you 1/4 the calories...

I dont know if you are using the nutrition tracker here but that has been helpful to me. I take the serving sizes listed on the food I ate and then modify the serving size to what I actually eat to get the correct calculations. If the serving size is a cup and I do 1/2 I change it to reflect that. Most serving sizes are based on a 1/2 or full cup or ozs. Get yourself a good kitchen scale that helps too. I have been able to keep a great diary of my intake for my NUT on OHs tracker, and it has made me very aware of what I am putting in my mouth. Good luck to you.

To figure out 1/4 of the values, just take the value and divide it by 4.  To figure out 1/2 divide by 2.

I just asked this question recently.  Check out my thread about it.  Thanks to all the math-heads that helped me out!

Thanks... I appreciate all the responses.  After I started getting them though, I thought DUH!!  I hate math too.  I guess I was thinking more in ounces when I sent it out.  At the phase I'm at now I'm doing good to get 1 oz of anything down right now.

If a serving is one cup and that has 300 calories and 10 grams protein and I eat half a cup, I divide and figure 150 calories and 5 grams protein.

Lol.  You should see the noteboo****ep my food journal in.  It's a mess even though I'm neurotic about figuring out exactly what I'm taking in.  I weigh my food before and after I eat.  I can't always eat everything I've fixed so I have to weigh what's left.  I get all stressed over things like deli meats that I can only estimate nutritional value for.  I will only make recipes I've got nutrition info for too.  I'm crazy I tell you!  I've about burned up my calculator, lol.
