Where do you get your b12 injections?
I would question the wisdom of using a surgeon who doesn't know that you can't use calcium carbonate... but, whatevs.
The fact of the matter is is that you were really unnecessarily harsh and rude in your comment. You could have conveyed the same message without coming off like a jerk, especially if your motivation was to watch for out for someone else's health.
I opted to get the b12 shots, rather than take it every other day because I forgot all too often. Now I show up to my regularly scheduled doctor's visits for my regular labs, and regular injections, no biggie, haven't missed one yet.
Not everyone is the same as you. Thusly what works for you may not work for everyone. Get over yourself.

An Rx for the B12 shots is pretty cheap. It's a generic and is only about $5 for 1 mL and another 25c or so for the needle. Easy peasy. I do my shots on the same day every month. It's improved drastically since presurgery as I was low-normal before surgery and am now hovering right around 1000 now. Make sure you get regular testing to make sure you're not over or under and can adjust your dose accordingly.
I know we are all busy.... ALL of us are.
Vitamins are not an option...Forgetting to take B12 can cause you paralysis and permanent nerve damage... Forgetting to take calcium can cause fractures in your spine, hip and wrists (Osteoporosis) again...There is no "fixing it"...
Are you not taking calcium because your vitamin has calcium? If so...here is what you do..
Go to the pharmacy and get one of those "pill minders" where you load up your daily pills for the week (AM/MIDMORNING/NOON/SUPPER/BEDTIME)
AM: take your MULTIVITAMIN (I use centrum chewable) take your sublingual B12 (you don't HAVE to have shots...Just make sure you get a sublingual that is 500 mc or more)
MIDMORNING: Calcium (500 mg) I take Citrical Maximum...Make SURE it is calcium citrate. B1 and Fish oil
NOON: Calcium Citrate (500 mg) Glucosamine/Chondroiten
AFTERNOON: Centrum Silver (these have NO iron) Calcium Citrate (500 mg) Vitamin d3 10,000 iu's (I get mine from Vitalady but you can buy them anywhere for cheap) but it MUST be a Dry vit D3 (NOT d2 in oil)
BEDTIME: Chewable Vitamin C and Tender Iron Carbonyl Iron
If you work or travel the daily supply can be popped out of the main tray.
My labs are always great. I do my OWN b12 injections 1 times a month and a sublingual on the 15th of the month)
There was a lady in our real life WLS group who was bad about taking her vites and she ended up iron deficient and also semi-paralyzed and with nerve damage (constant burning in her legs) and memory fog and depression because she got below 300 on her B12 labs.
My doctor made his paitients sign an agreement that you would be compliant because it is just that serious...Now of course if you want blindness, paralysis and broken bones...By all means...skip your labs. Yes, I am passionate about it because I have seen what happens in real life to people who "forget".
Warmly,
Jackie

PS: What are your last labs looking like? You are not far out from surgery and your surgeon should have just ordered your first set of labs...What are your numbers like.
As Andrea, VitaLady and others will tell you, what might be "normal" can be dangerously LOW for us RNY'ers. (OR DSers).
Warmly,
Jackie

I got a prescription from my doctor and bought a 32 ml vial for about $8. That is 32 shots, I think. The syringes were about $8, too, for 10 or 12, but you may be able to get them cheaper if you shop around.
That said, I just wanted to tell you my experience. I had a different surgery which was very malabsorptive. I started regaining most of my weight and mistakenly thought that since I was absorbing calories I was also absorbing nutrients. Big mistake. I didn't quit taking my vitamins, I was just lackadaisical about getting in all my calcium and other things I needed. I did get my labs yearly but unfortunately since my doctor, like many, wasn't thorough, I only had the minimum tested. I should have had very extensive lab work done.
I cruised along for several years until about 6 years post op. I got very sick. I could barely function. In fact, I would say I didn't function. Taking a shower was too much work for me. I had no energy and felt like crap. I had many tests done and couldn't find out the cause. I had my labs done, again the minimum, and found out I was seriously deficient in vitamin D and my ferritin level was 7 so I had an iron infusion.
It got so bad that I went back to my surgeon and begged for a reversal. They wouldn't do a reversal, only a revision, so I had my intestines lengthened so I would absorb more. That was almost 10 months ago. Since then I finally had a complete set of labs, about 6 months after my surgery, and I now take vitamins 4 times a day, plus iron. I was also diagnosed with osteoporosis. It has been slow but I am finally feeling better and able to function somewhat normally.
I can't tell you how life altering this fatigue was. I couldn't even play with my grandchildren. I felt like an invalid. I was deeply depressed because I couldn't do anything.
Now I don't miss a dose. I am so afraid of going back to the way I was. It is strong motivation. I will get my labs run again every 6 months and if a level even thinks it is decreasing I will up my supplements. I never want to feel that sick again.
