1-800-ASK-A-VET (Ask anything thread...)
I hear you! I still have occasional evenings where I find myself getting up and wandering into the kitchen looking for something to eat without even really consciously THINKING about it... it's almost like sleepwalking... I just find myself standing with the refigerator or pantry door open, LOL! Most times I win the battle because actually selecting something to eat requires a conscious decision (and I can convince myself that I do not need ANYTHING), but I do give in and have a snack more than I would like to do so.
As Nik mentioned in a post this weekend, sometimes when we find ourselves obsessed with food, it is our body's way of telling us we truly do need to eat more (or eat more protein or address a vitamin deficiency). If it really is just your brain looking for a treat, though, try to keep high protein snacks in the house. With our small pouches, sometimes if you eat some low calorie protein so that there is SOMETHING in your pouch (a slice or two of deli turkey or a RF string cheese stick, for example) it makes it easier to convince yourself that you do NOT need a treat (or anything else to eat).

Okay...my turn! LOL
Vitamins!!!!! I'm finally done with chewable multi-vitamins, but I don't know how many mg a day we're supposed to have. I'm going to be running to Walgreen's to get some new ones, can someone tell me please? Or, can you do the rundown?
I take a b12 and an extra vitamin d daily because the last lab results were BAD...barely on the charts with those 2. But in general, can you run down, one more time, the mg daily for our vitamins? Thanks!

Well you need two complete multis each day.... centrum, or centrum silver, I get the generic one-a-day
B12 if it was low, off the scale low, you should probably get some shots until the level is up in the 800+ range.... at the very least I'd do 2500 mcg sublingual day
If your D was low, you should also be taking 50,000 DRY D3 daily for three months and be retested.
In addition B-complexi is one of the most overlooked vitamins, but deficiencies can be really bad!
Iron in the evening with Vitamin C is important too
Calcium citrate minimum 1500 mg daily in three doses

I chased my dreams, and my dreams, they caught me!
I have a question I've been hesitating to ask.....so I guess this is my chance lol!
When I have days where I feel 'munchy', but the things I'm eating are protein forward, is that something I should be careful of making into a habit? I don't eat things that aren't on my list of acceptable foods, and it's usually low carb. The exeptions are soy crisps but that's rare.
For example.....at work. I work 2 jobs with ridiculously long hours. Some days I just want another 1/4 c of cottage cheese or chili or 1/2 a protein bar added in somewhere. Is that something I should be doing? Is this what people mean when they say they're having a big pouch day?
Thanks guys :-)
Meg
Yep... some days we are just hungrier than other days.
As long as your additional food emphasizes protein, you are doing just fine! Nobody ever gained wieght from oaccsionally having an extra 1/2 C of cottage cheese, and extra LF string cheese stick, an extra 80-calorie yogurt, or a few slices of deli tukey/ham/chicken!

Okay - here is my PITA question(s)...
I am almost 8 weeks out. My plan allows for 3/4c food per meal. I have no problems with this at all. I read others who are at the same point I am and they are stille ating 1/4 c or even tablespoons. I know when it is time to eat and I know when I have had enough! (I feel hunger and fullness). Is it common that some of us can eat the higher amount while others are still so restricted?
Someone posted something on a thread of mine yesterday that has me concerned. I drink a lot of crystal light lemonade (and I like it strong) and they said I am early out for the because it is acidic. Do I need to not drink it so much?
What causes ulcers post op? I have tolerated quite well chili seasoning and other spicey stuff. Does eating those things make me a higher risk for ulcers.
TIA for your replies and thanks for the patience in our newbie posts that are redundant and annoying!

Some surgeons make the pouch a little smaller or a little larger than "average". Some people are more sensitive to what "full" feels like or to how full "full" is (does that make sense, LOL?!?)
I am not sure that CL lemonade has the same acidity level as real lemonade, and have not heard anything about people running tinto probvelms because of it, but I am honestly not sure. It might be a really good question to ask your surgeon. (Let us know what (s)he says!)
Spicy food does not cause ulcers, but it does make existing ulcers more painful. Smoking, NSAIDs and aspirin, the H. pylori bacteria (some people have an excess of it). Some doctors also say that caffeine causes an increase in stomach acid, which can then cause ulcers.

I am by no means a vet but I wanted to give my opinion on your first question.
I'm less than 5 weeks out and I can easily eat 3oz of protein and half a cup of veggies. If it's a slider food like cottage cheese or yogurt, I can eat much more. I can also drink as much as I want as quickly as I want as well. I think things like this will vary from surgeon to surgeon. The people I've talked to who have the same surgeon as me, can eat the same way I do. JMO and just speculation.
I specifically asked my nut about drinking crystal light orange juice. She said it was fine. I've been drinking it since right after surgery.

I didn't feel full/hunger in the beginning..... I was on the 1/4 cup meal plan going up to 1/2 cup at six months and up to a cup at one year..... and between six months and nine months my full signal came back, and I had to cut BACK on my eating.... I was eating too much!
I would try to maximize the weight loss window in the beginning by trying NOT to eat 3/4 cup.... because if you eat that much now, you don't have very much to increase TO, and you might feel deprived over time that you don't have any progressing to much larger meals. But that's just me. zI liked that I could increase my amount over time.
It's up to you about the lemonaide, if it doesn't bother you, then fine. I don't know much about ulcers.
