Two newly classified eating disorders I think you should know about
Sheesh....don't tell my husband about this or he might try an intervention with me. I have always been a bit picky about what I will eat. I will not eat foods with strong flavors or overly spicy stuff and he loves to try and force me to try all kinds of odd foods. And I am attempting to eat a healthy diet but I do not shun foods that are not organic. I shun carb foods that don't deliver fiber or nutrition. Maybe I will be okay and safe from being classified I hope. I am healthy so far and I haven't had a major regain. I never got all the way to just normal BMI but I am only slightly overweight. Maybe I am fine. Gosh I hate to find this stuff out. Cause now I am over analyzing and rationalizing. Just keep the white coats away a little longer okay?

Once I read this I realized I worked with someone who is probably borderline orthorexic at least. (like I'm qualified to say that...lol) He only does the organic thing and brews up these tinctures at work to drink that are combinations of herbs, wheat grass, ginger, and something I cannot remember right now but it makes it smell just awful. Sweet guy but a bit overboard sometimes.
Cheezus Fries.
Only in America could a medical establishment decide that people who won't eat highly processed industrial-generated food must be weirdly disturbed sickos!
Orthorexics don't eat processed food, artificial coloring or flavoring, or anything tainted by pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or any other crap. Possibly no caffeine, alcohol, sugar, salt, wheat, or dairy. Maybe even some raw stuff.
And what, do we find, is the disastrous health consequence of shunning crap food?
Weight loss.
Save me now.
Not!

Interested in low-carb nutrition? Thinking of trying Atkins? Want to try high-fat and/or high-protein eating? Whether or not you have had (or are thinking about) WLS http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/atkins/
I don't think they are saying that EVERYONE who does this is an orthorexic. If your read one of the above poster's explanation, it is because they take this to SUCH AN EXTREME that they are impeded in the ability to lead a normal life; personal relationships are put in jeopardy; they become isolated; etc., etc.
I'm posting a link to a youtube video that I think will demonstrate what exactly orthorexia is:

I've actually seen this play out with people. I think the distinction is that folks go so far that they actually start forming very negative and inaccurate reactions to food in general.
Case in point. My 7th month post op I *****ed someone out on this very board for eating strawberries. STRAWBERRIES. Why? They are CARBS!!!
That ain't normal. Thankfully I went and found my damn mind but still...I think THAT type of thinking is more what's being addressed in the classification of orthorexia.
