I'm sorry to say that I have nothing new to report. My liver enzymes continue at a slightly elevated level. I never went for the second liver biopsy as I have other more pressing issues going on......

When my numbers were higher, I went for the whole 9 yards liver testing - ultrasound, MRI, w/ dye, etc.  They found absolutely nothing wrong - just high enzymes with no apparent physical manifestation of any actual problem (other than the enzymes).

They said they were just going to monitor it (by getting my blood work done every 3 months).  That sounded to me like they were just going to wait until there WAS some physical manifestation of a problem (like a tumor or cancer or something).

So I took matters in my own hands and started eliminating various things from my intake to try to deal with the problem instead of waiting for a bigger one to come along.

Ladies, I am so glad to have found this thread! My enzymes have been gradually increasing for almost a year. Today, my alt and ast were normal, but my alp has continually gone up and was 154.0.  I'm 57 years old and post menopausal.  Last spring, I found out through a bone density, that I now have osteopenia and my doctor contributes the elevations to that condition. I've been researching and there is a definite correlation between the two. I do take lexapro and use my share of artificial sweetener, but what's a person to do?!  I'm four years out of RNY and have maintained my weight loss.  I still can't help but be a little concerned.

Did you discover the culprit?

Hi Wendy,

i know this is an old post but I would love to know if they ever found anything?   I am 3 years post-op Roux en y with elevated liver enzymes since my first lab work after surgery.   I have had many blood tests with nothing concrete, now they are looking to do biopsy etc.  My issue is I also started having joint pain, itching, fatigue, insomnia... I have gained 25 lbs.  did you also have those symptoms?

thanks

they did everything to my liver & never found anything (never found anything wrong w/ it & never found a cause of the elevated enzymes)

I still suspect it was the protein powder because, through my OWN trial & error of eliminating different things from my diet & getting retested periodically, I have found that when I go OFF protein powder, my enzymes go down.  so I no rarely do protein supplements & get almost all my protein from diet alone.

I don't have the same symptoms as you do.  I really hope they find what is causing your problem though.

Sending positive thoughts your way - Wen

Thank you Wendy.  I went to the liver Dr. They are just assuming it is NASH but I'm sure they will determine (Like the Dr's before) it's not NASH and want to move onto the liver biopsy.  They believe it's from weight gain and the limited alcohol I was drinking.  So I'm off of everything and stopped eating after 730pm and am eating better etc.. i tried to explain the numbers were even high at my lowest weight but they want to start the process over And start from the begining.  ITs not that I mind but my enzymes have been high for 3 years and I'm perimenopausAL...etc... how can my liver NOT be pooping itself out? It's so concerning to me Because noone one seems to know the long term effects...
