So I'm only 5 weeks out, but protein shakes are so gross to me I can't choke them down.. I love beef Jerky and decided to try it yesterday and it went down fine!! Is that just as good of a protein source as the shakes?  Jerky isn't cheap but neither is unjury! and it tastes a hell of a lot better! =)

Jerky is a great protein source-- but it's also a ridiculous sodium source-- with very very high amounts of salt in it. It will make it hard to stay hydrated and cause fluid retention if you are prone to it, which will lead to deceptively high "weigh ins." Also, if you do not chew the hell out of it, prepare for the stuckage and foamies-- because early out, jerky's hard on the ol' pouchster.

You and I had surgery the same day. I can not imagine me being able to eat jerky yet because little pieces of ham that I try to eat now give me the foamies and get stuck. Just remember to chew, chew, chew and good luck.

I haven't really encountered too many things I can't eat and I've never had the foamies.. I've had a few things stick in my chest like the calcium chews.. blech.. but not too much else.. well excep****er believe it or not sits like a rock in my chest.  I just ate about 1.5 oz for lunch and I feel great.. maybe I'll make some so it will have less salt it really beats the shakes!

I eat jerky quite a bit but I do try to limit it due to the sodium. My favorite is the new Matador Beef Jerky by Jack Links. It is very tender and very easy to chew.

Try Ostrim.   It is really good, not greasy, not hard to chew and goes down well.  I have not had any issues eating it.

I eat beef and turkey jerky when I really need to up my protein intake for the day because my surgeon wants me to be getting all my protein from solid foods. He eventually wants me to kick protein shakes for good. I'm not sure how likely that is but I'm trying very hard to follow his instructions. On days I eat a good amount if jerky I usually try to drink at least another full Vitamin Water which is 20oz.
