Going Vegeterian after RNY? Is it possible??

I recently watched Food Inc. and it was SO eye opening about how our food industry, farms, slaughterhouses, stores, and restaurants prepare and market our food to us.
The "farms" where they keep these animals is unimaginably horrible. Full of E-Coli. Majority of our cows are corn fed now, and the meat is part fillers washed in chemicals to try and kill the E-Coli.
I just can't stand it! We're thinking of going strictly Organic - Grass Fed, Free Range on our meat and poultry. Which is going to be extremely expensive.

So I was curious since we probably wont be eating meat every night of the week .... is it possible to still get enough protein without meat in your diet?
Obviously I know I can drink protein shakes and eat Greek Yogurt till I'm blue in the face. But I want meals with substance.
Any suggestions of books, websites, or recipes I should check out while we're investigating our decision?

It is totally possible to be vegetarian after RNY. There are so many foods with protein that can substitute your meat proteins.

This is a great online place for some recipes that are high in protein.

THis is a great book for vegetarian recipes.

This isn't answering your question but I shop at a store called Sprouts here.  All their meat is organic & most of the time it's cheaper that the nasty stuff at regular stores provided I watch their sales.  (And they have good sales every week!)

I think Sprouts is the same store as Henry's, which I have here in San Diego.  LOVE IT.  Don't know what I would do without that lovely store. Lots of vegetarian items there too, for the original poster. :)

I try to eat raw food as much as possible.  I do get eggs that are grass fed with no antibiotics or hormones from the Amish.  I buy turkey that is grass fed with no nitrates, antibiotics or hormones from Fresh Market.  I also get ground beef that is grass fed from the Amish.

We don't have many good stores in our area.(Whole Foods is a good one.)  I don't eat processed food or any fast food.  I try to shop the perimeter of the store and use unsweetened almond milk for my protein shakes or protein ice cream.

"Suicide by Sugar", "Licking the Sugar Habit" and "Stopping Inflammation" by Nancy Appleton good books about nutrition and the toxins added to our food.

There is so much good info out there.  Food Inc is a great video.  There are a couple more good ones and also more good books = I'm reading "The End of Overeating" and it is very good.

Food production is about industry profit and not about our health.  It is about getting us addicted so we eat more and industry makes more profit.  It is sick!

I'm not going totally vegetarian or raw food, but making changes.  I do have a hot protein drink for breakfast and protein in greek yogurt in the evening so I can make it to 100gm protein a day.  I'm not a big meat eater - but do indulge on occassion.  (I just wonder what is in my meat!!)

Best wishes on your journey.

I completely absolutely agree with your post. Thank you for posting it! I'm SO glad to know there's other WLS people out there who feel the same way.

I am a vegetarian my dr said its fine. There are a lot more things w protein than greek yogurt and protein shakes.....all kinds of cheese and eggs penuts beans...ect. When you are a vegetarian you start to look at anything w protein and some veggies as substance esp. if you make it really good for u and delish.

I went veg for the animal's welfare. Not mine. They are so mistreated...mistreated isnt the right word...they are tortured.

I've been vegetarian for about 20 years and it hasn't been difficult since surgery. I eat lots of Greek yogurt, edamame, tofu, lentils, beans, cheese, eggs, veggie burgers, cottage cheese and fruits and veggies.

Most days I get 90-100 grams of protein, and my weight loss has been steady and consistent for the 11 months since RNY.

I do a lot of my shopping at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, and my general rule is to buy food as close to its whole, natural state as possible and to avoid processed food.

I've been a vegetarian for about 25 years.  Certainly did not start eating meat again when I had RNY.  I have no trouble getting enough protein now, but I did in the very beginning.  That was mostly about not finding a protein shake I liked, though.

Please share, What do you eat on a regular basis daily?

I'm definitely not going "full vegetarian" but I think we're going to have meatless nights.
Thanks Kelly!
