Hunger is NOT uncontrollable...
Good post, NIk!
2 things that work for me, one short-term & one longer-term.
The short-term tip is to always be mindful that thirst masks as hunger. When I'm hungry outside of mealtime, rather than reaching for a snack right away (or -gasp- some situational temptation that I'm surely better off walking away from
), I stop & have a good drink of water or tea and wait 20 minutes or so to re-evaluate whether I still need to eat. About 80% of the time, I'm fine without the food. If I make the decision to eat, I wait out the additional 10 minutes then have the food. I feel much more in control this way.
The longer-term tip is simply clean eating. The longer I go without foods that are less than healthy choices, the less I crave them at all. This has worked for me most recently, as I've been eating as I should for several weeks straight. The other evening, I was in a social setting. There was a mountainous tray of cookies on the table in front of me. I had absolutely no desire to have even one! People all around me were eating the cookies and they smelled really good, but I was just fine without them.
Now don't get me wrong, the first week or so of clean eating after a period of grazing & eating anything was the toughest! After the first rough week or so, I'm far more empowered to stay the course.
This really is within our control!
