Confused about Vit D3
I know that I need to take D3. My problem is how much do I need to take. Some say they take 1000 a day some 5000 and some even more then that. How do I figure out how much I should take. Now I don't have any lab numbers yet since I just had my rny. I want to make sure that I do not fall into the area where I am in bad need of it ya know.
With that what are some good brands to take? Is it better in a pill, liquid, powder or what? Also do I need to take it with any other specific vitamiin?

You need your numbers to know how much to take. It really varies from person to person. However, people with good level and that have not had RNY typically need about 2000 IU a day to maintain their levels. Most RNY folks I know take 10,000, 25,000 or even 50,000 IU a day. For us 1000 IU would not do anything.
You need dry D3 - either a tablet or a capsule with powder inside. Not one of the softgel things with oily stuff inside.
You do not need to take it with any other particular vitamin and it will not interfere with the absorption of any other vitamins, either.
But get a level drawn to find out your level.

How low are you? We really need to be at least 80. If you are really very low, 4000 IU a day is not gonna help much.

My Vitamin D3 is at 96. I have taken Sams Club brand (members mark) vitamin D-3 5000iu once daily since about 3 weeks out. This is one of the "oil" based ones. I have read that you are only suppose to take a dry D, but my holistic nutritionist says my labs are excellent and it is working for me so why stop. If I go down at my next set of labs I will change to a dry, but right now this is working for me. January 2010 my D levels were at an 11! So I have come a long way.
I know that if you don't have enough D that your skin gets dry and scaly, so without a blood test to tell you how low you are no one can really say how much you need. If I was you I would make sure my multi vitamin was first a good quality one and second it had vitamin D-3 in it already. Then I would wait until I had blood work done.
