starting ECT on Wed

I feel good about.  Not too nervous yet but I probably will be when it gets closer.  But I get nervous about any medical procedure I haven't had.  I was horribly nervous about my endoscopy and nervous about the steroid injections in my back, both ot which turned out to be no big deal at all.

I also feel blessed to have a lot of support.  I did decide to tell my mother and sister, and they are coming to visit in a couple weeks to help out around the house and do some cooking of stuff like a big pot of chili I can reheat for meals for a while.  I guess asking for help is a good thing after all.

I so admire you for doing this Kelly.  And I am praying that you will see rapid positive results from it.  It's such a big step, but it's one you haven't tried and it'll be worth it either way just so you KNOW.

Also, glad your Mom and Sis are being so supportive.  You had mentioned they were good with it but I didn't know they were coming out to help.  That will be nice.

Did you say they do a couple of sessions a week, up to a total of like 8?   I've looked into this myself but it was years ago and it's probably all different now.

So much hope that you will get the relief you need.  It's been too long coming.

They will do three sessions a week for six to 12 sessions, based on my response.  Then one a week for four weeks, then one every other week for eight weeks, then one a month for several more months.  I don't think all docs to it that way, some just do the six to 12 and that's it but I guess this doc has found doing further sessions helps the improvement last significantly longer.

I don't know if it's admirable.  But it really is about the only thing I have not tried and it's necessary.  I  know there are risks.  But the risks of not doing it are greater, in my opinion, for me.  It's kind of like WLS.  We all knew there were risks, right?  And ECT sure has less risks that WLS.  But we decided WLS was worth the risks.  And  this is sure worth it to me.

I'm hoping you have another 'no big deal at all' experience to add to your list, and that the results are better than you imagined.

And asking for help is kind of that way, too. It can seem so hard when you're working up to it, but once you do it, you have to wonder why you waited so long.

Good luck.

I worked at a psychiatric treatment center years ago that offered ECT.  I have seen this work for those where medication management just could not help with the depression, etc. I have also been in the room when ECT was provided and it is not anything to be terribly concerned about.  It is very quiet and occurs quickly......the only part of your body that will move is maybe your big toe.  I wish you the best of luck and seriously hope that this provides you relief.  It will be good to have the extra help around for a few weeks.

Good luck!!!!

Oh, I'll definitely post updates.  I really think I'll be feeling OK.  Apparently most people do, although of course some have some problems.  But I feel positive about it.  I was told I will be able to drive on days I don't have treatments and I should not require much help at home, won't need someone to stay with me the rest of the day after a treatment, etc.  Now, due to the depression, I can sure use some help at home, but at least the ECT should not be any more debilitating.  And I can expect to start feeling better after just three or four treatments, and a good bit better after just six.  So within two weeks.  That is so good to know.  Makes it a lot easier to feel bad now, at least knowing there is light at the end of the tunnel.
