Can you drink too much water?

I was reading somewhere, that if when you pee and your urine is dark yellow in the toilet, then you need to drink more. Most people know this. I also read that if it is totally clear in the toilet after you pee, than you need to drink less (it should look a little yellow). I read this in a womens health magazine while I was babysitting, but I cannot for the life of me remeber the name of the magazine.

Its becomes a problem when you drink too much water and don't have the acompaning electrolights. It is called water intoxication. Usually it is seen in infants and athlets. This is rare and is caused my drinking too much water too soon. If you spread out what you are drinking, you will be fine.

I wish I could drink too much.  I know I need more water just stuggle daily getting it in.  I've cut back on my coffee consumption to work on getting in more water.  It's going slowly but it is getting better.

I've been fortunate I guess that I've never been dehydrated to the extent I needed to go to the ER.  I can tell when I'm headed toward dehydration and force liquids into me, even staying up late into the night to get more in.

I agree I don't think any of us have to worry about too much water.  And newbies that are getting in 64-80 oz a few weeks out amaze me, they truly are lucky to be able to drink that much.

Most people don't know that you can die from drinking to much water. Pre op- I did drink enough water to make myself sick a couple times but you're right- its hard to do. But it is possible and not fun feeling.

Post op- no way could I even come close-

I am SO GLAD to see this thread. I am only 2 weeks out and it is ridiculously easy for me to eat and drink--especially drink.  I have not been drinking as much as I should because it freaks me out that I'm able to drink so easily. I just drank a buttload of Crystal Light all at once and barely felt anything. The only problems I've had so far are some nausea, some acne, some trouble sleeping (anxiety!) and some pretty serious protein shake hatred.

I guess I'm one of the blessed ones, but I keep wondering what the crap is wrong with me that I'm not throwing up all the time. Any new food I've introduced has stayed down. It's freaky, I tell you!

...though I have weighed the same for three days now, and that kind of blows. I know it's temporary, but still.

Thanks, though. Sincerely.

Kelly - Thank you so much for posting this! I am just over a week post-op and I started off sip sip sipping in the hospital and then as the days have gone by it is much easier to drink *normally*. I can take a nice normal few swigs of my water with no problems and I was worried that I've damaged my new pouch. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones - I had no surgery complications, no nausea, no vomiting, needed no pain meds, and now I'm able to drink pretty much as much as I want with no problems. I'm still on full liquids and measure my protein in 2oz cups and drink 2 oz every waking hour to make sure and spread it out and get in all my protein. I'm actually getting about 70g of proteins the past couple of days.

Just wanted to thank  you and all of the vets here on the board for your valuable info!!!!!!!

I was extremely lucky in that I could drink almost normally (except for water) postop. By 72 hours postop I was getting in 100 oz of liquid and 100 g of protein and I still get somwhere near that daily.

It's only WATER I can't stomach.

I keep thinking that the post-apocalyptic after December 21.... I'll die of dehydration because I'll have to drink water! I'll hoard crystal light.

(PS, I'm going to be at some Mayan ruins on the day of the end of teh world. If the Mayans have cursed the world to end, I might as well be at the epicenter.... thanks daddy for the all-expenses paid trip)

I found this very helpful. THANK YOU SO MUCH. My doctor told me to take 15 minutes on medicine cup of water....but not to drink 30 before or after food but to get in 64 ounces of fluids. I'm 10 days post op. Do you know how hard it is to reach 64 ounces at 4 hours at a time when you have to stop for AN HOUR each time you eat? I'd never sleep. I haven't hit my water goal once. But I don't have discomfort when I drink. I just didn't want to do anything to hurt my pouch and was worried that maybe I had some nerve damage from surgery keeping me from knowing my pouch was screaming from the amounts of fluid. :) so this helps. I feel better. Again, thanks!
