Hiatal hernia
So I was told at my pre-op that I have a Hiatal hernia and that the surgeon would fix it when I have my RNY. has anyone else had this fixed during their RNY? Did you have any complications because of it? Was there added pain?
I just don't know what to expect with that part.

I did not, but my friend did... she had no complications and was doing just fine... and still is...

I had hiatal hernia repair during my RNY surgery. It did not cause any additional pain or complications for me. The only difference I had was that I was not allowed to lift more than 10 lbs or released to do strenuous exercise for 2 months after surgery. I will be 5 months out next week and am going strong!
I had this. And, from what I now know, it was very large. Added almost an hour to my surgery but other than that it was uneventful.
They do it at the same time because they are literally "at it" to be where they have to be for everything else.
In my case, they rebuilt it with some sort of surgical quality mesh.

I had a both a liver lesion resection and a hiatal hernia repair during my RNY. The additional procedures made the surgery longer, but since I was asleep, that really didn't affect me.
Since I never had an RNY without the other 2 procedures, I can't tell you if there was additional pain, but I can tell you that my post-surgical pain was much less than I expected. I was off all pain meds by the 4th day. My pain was not the internal pain I experienced with my hysterectomy, it was really more like intense muscle soreness. Don't get me wrong, that soreness lasted a couple of weeks -- but it did get better every day and wasn't so bad that I needed medication for it.
