All those bummed out about their thinning hair...(warning: not for the faint of heart)

I am showing you this not out of some bid for pity. And it's not necessarily poking fun at myself for your benefit (well...maybe a little). I have alopecia areata. That means my hair has been coming out for years and the doctors don't know why. I have no hair at the top of my head. Most people don't believe me when I say that becuase you're used to seeing this version of Nik:

But to get to the above Nik...every single day...since even before I had WLS or ever came to OH...I have had to deal with this version of Nik in the mirror:

My point here? I understand your temporary hair loss is upsetting to you. But you are going through wonderful changes otherwise. Work on your protein and it will get better.

But if you're feeling down think of it this way. Your hair will grow back. Mine won't. If I, in the face of all that, can still manage to have an ego the size of Texas, you might just be ok too.

Thanks Nik! While I don't have alopecia, my scalp is showing through and it may not come back. My hair has been thin from birth and the older I get, the more thinner it becomes. With surgery, it just added to the loss. But hey, I think you are beautiful just like you are and I believe I am beautiful just like I am. I chose not to wear wigs or hats to cover mine - and I like it like that. My attitude is - if people don't like my balding hair, they can look elsewhere - and I smile everyday as I comb it - knowing I am healthier and smaller.

Again Nik, you are beautiful in your looks and your personality!!!

My thinning hair!

I truly you Nik.  My hair has been forever thick to the point of annoyance.  So I'm one of the few hoping to lose a few strands.

Thanks Nik for posting this!!!  I also have Alopecia Areata.  I'm still early out but it will be very interesting to see what does happen with my hair later on, kinda nervous about it but getting healthy makes me happy :)

Nik, just wanted to give you your Props,I am one that has lost quite a bit of hair, but, I say, "Oh well, if I had a chance to do this all over again, I would in a heart beat. I'm healthy and trying to start a Life that I never had." And guess what, I bought me a cute little wig and nobody really gives a damn one way or the other...Thanks for making us realize to STOP sweating over the small dumb stuff. You're a Doll.

Great post Nik. I empathize with you since my 14 yo son has the same condition but his is more advanced. He was diagnosed at 11 so you can imagine the taunts he receives daily. We now try to keep his head shaved but it doesn't help. Thank you for sharing and hopefully yours won't progress any further.
