Poll for those who started with a BMI >50 and are done losing
I had surgery 2.5 years ago. My highest recorded BMI was 53 (it could have been higher, but I refused to get on a scale for years). My current BMI is 22 and I've been maintaining for 16 months now.

I'm only 3 months out so clearly not anywhere close to goal yet. But wanted to let you know that my starting BMI was 72 and my surgeon had no problems suggesting RNY for me. I hate it when people say that if you have this much to lose, you should have a different surgery to be successful. I have every intention of being successful with RNY. By the way, my BMI is now 62.
Highest BMI 58.7 (weight was 363)
Lowest weight BMI 30.2 (got down to 187, could not maintain the Exercise level {4 hours, 6 days a week} to stay there)
Current BMI 33 (204, I maintain this with no problems even with my arthritis nonexercise issues)
So, No I did not ever get down to a "normal" BMI however I did get from Super Morbidly Obese to Obese.
Doc told me to consider myself a sucess if I maintained a 50% excess losst at 24 months out, and not to expect to get to a normal BMI. I have maintained a 70% excess loss after 24 months. So That spells sucess to me.

I agree with you and the other poster about the definition of "success". When you are pushing 400 pounds and can barely function on a daily basis, even if she "only" lost 150 pounds, it will change her quality of life (and health) dramatically!)

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
I think I am pretty much done losing, still about 20 pounds from goal but my doctor feels most of what I have left is excess skin. Estimation is anywhere from 20 to 30 pounds of excess skin. When I started the process, I weighed 501 pounds and my BMI was 82. Now, just over three years later I have lost 331 pounds and I am at a BMI of 28. My RNY was the best thing I have ever done. It is possible to lose large amounts of weight with an RNY. I was made aware of all the different surgery types, my doctor would have referred me elsewhere if I had wanted a DS, but deep down I knew the RNY was the surgery for me. Good luck!
My highest BMI was on the border of 50, and my current BMI is 24.7. My lowest BMI was 23.2 (which was for about a month). :)
