I haven't seen much posted about drinking diet sodas. Are you allowed to drink diet sodas after surgery? I mean when you are completely healed, etc?

well, of all I have read is that carbonation really can not stretch the puch, because it is a fluid and goes right through our pouch (we have no pyloric valve after all), so that might be a bit of a mtyh. although a lot of doctor's still sya this.

But what IS a good reason to stay away from it, is that artificial sweeteners and caffeine and some special stuff that is in cola light, will make that you start craving more sweets and carbs. That is what I heard, do not know if that is ture, but sounds logical.

Having said all this, I read this on this board so not from first hadn. My first hand is that my doc says: you can have it, if you can stomach it. Lots of people do not like it or handle it very well after surgery.

I chose not to have it for now.

This is my favorite topic!
I was a big time soda pop drinking all of my adult life.  You can imagine how shocked I was when the dietitian told my information session group that carbonated beverages, including diet sodas would not be allowed post op!!!

Regardless of the reason, I stopped drinking carbonated beverages a few months before surgery and have not had one in over 2 years.

i gave up diet coke 3 months before my RNY on 6/21/10.  immediately after giving up the diet coke, i stopped craving sweets.  haven't craved them since!  my surgeon says no carbonated drinks.  my last diet coke was 3/20/10.  i don't even want it any more!

I drink diet pepsi in great moderation a 20oz bottle lasts about 3-4 days. I often just crave the bubles so I pour a little into a glass with ice and enjoy. It was suggested that I avoid it but only due to excess gas its causes in the pouch making it uncomfortable. But if I only drink a little it does not bother me

Back in the old days I drank tons of soda.  Nearly 4 months post surgery I haven't had a soda in over 6 months and I don't miss it at all.  I remember being freaked out when they said no carbonated beverages but trust me it is a good life without them.

I will occasionally have a diet coke, but I generally feel kind of gross afterward. The first few times I tried to drink one it burned so much in my chest that I didn't want one again (the burning is common, don't think that something's wrong if it happens to you). Do yourself a favor and try to not let it become a habit!

They do NOT stretch the pouch.
We will NOT explode if we drink them.

I drink them no problem.
My biggest problem is the aspartame in them
