Tannins in Tea?....No Coffee, and No Black Teas-What do I drink?
I am two weeks post surgery and really the only thing I miss is something warm to drink. I love coffee but am suprised how much I don't miss it....it is really the warm drink I miss. I was told no coffee or black tea due to the tannins in them that block the absorbtion of iron? Has anyone else heard this or have any suggestions beside ho****er with lemon? Thanks!
Well, that whole blocking absorption thing has very little science to back it up....BUT because you are two weeks postop I would have lots of other arguments about why to avoid stuff like coffee, black tea and anything else remotely acidic, like IT WILL EAT YOUR STAPLE LINE so don't drink it.
It's really tough to sort out the many crazy messages that get spewed about what to consume postop. Let me try to give a bit of a common sense, grass roots, farmer/rancher intelligence based reality check:
Let us assume you have a raw open skin wound, the kind you'd call a "scrape" and expect to have a scab. Only it's consistently wet and kept in the dark and therefore cannot scab over. It's totally raw until it heals.
What would you put on that wound? Some people would say hydrogen peroxide.....the same stuff you use to bleach your hair. Pour some "apothecary strength" peroxide into a container with some hair. Leave it for 24 hours and see what happens. Do you want that to be on your cut stomach tissue?
Think about Coke. Or coffee. Or lemonade.....What's in the beverage and what do you think it would do to raw flesh if given the chance? Google it if you can't imagine it.
It's not about absorption of iron. It's about what will irritate your internal surgical wounds or your transformed gut. You need to remember that because you have a RNY you will forever be at increased risk of intestinal ulcer and to baby your belly accordingly.
If I were in your shoes, I'd be thinking about herbal teas like chamomile and cornsilk, or chicken or beef boullion. Or look at herbal blends that talk about stomach soothing properties, but avoid anything that talks about any kind of stomach or intestinal cleansing. Those are chemical laxatives.

Not that early out, coffee even decaf is a diuretic. It is hard enough to get all your fluids in at that stage without sabotaging yourself with a dehydrant.
You can have decaf herbal and I believe even green tea.
I Was in Big lots the other day and I picked up some of the single serve drink pouches and there was an Apple Cider one that you could drink hot or cold, it is FABULOUS! I put a cinnamon stick in it and drink away its SO good and toasty too! It's made by Strums and called "Spiced Cider Drink Mix" and yep...it's sugar free!
