So...my doctor says that they usually only ask for one week of fasting before surgery but he wants me to be on nothing but Sugar Free Carnation Breakfast drinks for 2 weeks before surgery. Im going to starve! Has anyone else had to do  this? Im sure its because of my weight. Hes trying to get more weight loss from me Im guessing. Anyone have to get through all this?

My pre-op diet was 10 days--SF CIB 3 times a day and 2 ozs of chicken 1 a day.  Most of my friends whho did not have surgery here were 2 weeks of optifast preop.

you will be able to do it.  remember to supplement that CIB with as much water and sugarfree jello as you can stand!  :-)

OH also if you just absolutly have to CHEW something--Sugar free GUM is the BOMB!!!!!!!!!  satisfies that Oral fixation and keeps mouth moist!  Just don't swallow the gum.

Lots of docs recommend something similar.  Although you might wanna consider a good protein drink instead - there is no sugar free carnation instant breakfast and the no sugar added still has something like seven grams of sugar and if you add it to one cup of skim milk, it only gives you 13 grams of protein.  A good protein drink, higher in protein (20-30 grams) will help you feel fuller.  Plus one with less sugar will do a better job of shrinking your liver.

Yeah thanks Kelly....I was trying to tell that man that I couldnt find no sugar free carnation instant breakfast. All I could find was a no sugar added. The surgeon is the one that suggested it. I thought I should try something else too. I have another appointment with him on Dec 15 so Ill ask him then.

I swear, I think a lot of docs don't read labels of stuff before they recommend it.

When you go on the 15th, you might wanna take him the nutritional stats for some other protein shakes.  You could show him how they compare to the CIB.  Like, Syntrax Nectar has no sugar and 23 grams of protein, compared to the CIB in one cup of skim milk, which would have something like 19 grams of sugar and only 13 grams of protein.  Or Unjury in one cup of skim milk, which would have 12 grams of sugar I think (all from the lactose in the milk) and 28 grams of protein.

I think that you're fortunate!  I had to use HMR shakes - which tasted terrible and were expensive.  At least CIB tastes pretty good.

He is not doing this for weight loss, the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver giving him better access to your stomach.  I did 9 days - and only lost 1lb.  You'll surely do better than that!

Best wishes for your surgery!
